Russian TV Shows, Part 1
I started watching Russian TV out of curiosity when Netflix uploaded “Sniffer” (Нюхач). Over the past half year, I’ve noticed a real improvement in my listening skills, even though I still watch with English subtitles. I’m aiming to be off of subtitles by the end of the year.
At this point, I’m several series in, and I thought I’d throw together a guide to some of my favorite shows.
General disclaimer - I called out the obvious trigger warnings where I remembered them, but I’m nowhere near perfect at noticing/remembering these things. Do your research please. All of them have some level of violence because I’ve been watching cop dramas. Also remember that this is Russian television, so it will normally be a few shades darker than American TV.
Нюхач (“Sniffer”)
This show is about a guy with an enhanced sense of smell who consults with law enforcement. He’s an absolute jerk, and I love him.
I’d say it’s in the same vein as Monk or Lie To Me - it’s a crime drama centered around a guy’s weird skill and unique personality. It’s a quiet show with a sense of humor.
On Netflix.
Метод (“The Method”)
This is a show about a man who hunts serial killers and his young apprentice. It’s fantastically written, beautifully filmed, and emotionally devastating.
It’s closest to Dexter in subject matter, but is darker and more serious in theme. It is very violent and graphic, with frequent portrayals of extreme cruelty. If you have any triggers, either avoid or do your research.
On Netflix.
Мажор (“Silver Spoon”)
The son of an oligarch gets tangled up in a fight with the cops, and his dad makes him join the force.
This is my favorite show to date. It’s somewhere between a cop procedural, a comedy, and a soap opera - in the same ballpark as NCIS. Or Scandal, if it took itself less seriously, because the show also has a pretty complex political plot line.
On Netflix.
Беги! (“Run!”)
This is a four-part mini-series that’s kind of like a better second season of Prison Break. A software developer is framed for the murder of his brother and works to clear his name.
It’s a good show. I wish it was longer - the characters were interesting and the plot was sufficiently complicated to drive a full series.
On Amazon Prime.
Пёс (“Dog”)
A show about a “not alcoholic” ex-cop who finds a dog at the scene of a murder, and the two solve crime together.
I can’t think of an American show in the same vein. It’s a quieter show that pretty much focuses on how much of a mess Max’s life is.
You should probably watch this before “Silver Spoon” because otherwise you might hate the lead actor too much. Just take my word for it.
On Amazon Prime.
