It's been speculated by fans of the show and a few media historians that this episode may have at least partially inspired the similar 1981 Whitney Strieber novel The Hunger which was loosely adapted into the MGM/Tony Scott horror film of the same name starring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, and Susan Sarandon in 1983. It's of interest to note that Ann Blyth, best remembered as the spoiled Veda Pierce opposite Joan Crawford in the 1945 Warner Bros./Michael Curtiz film noir Mildred Pierce, is still alive at the time of this post and is currently 96 years old as of late-May 2025. (Update: Ann Blyth passed away on June 24th, 2026. May she rest in peace.)
