saw a theory that the SmokeStack twins were posing as one man in Chicago, which helped them get away with stealing from both sides. i'm poised to believe that because visually their clothing was very clearly of the two mobs. smoke was full irish— tweed, bowler hat. while stack had the full mafia look. yk italian leather shoes, fedora etc etc . like the details!!
eli stepped out of the small kitchen into the open hallway of his home, rubbing at the dark circles under his eyes and studying the dryness of his cheeks. he'd been pulling more nights at the carroll volunteer fire department as the number of heater fires ticked up. as they did every winter. the sound of the doorbell ringing had eli stepping out to yell, "it's open".
the twins would be home this weekend and he wanted the house in order before that. or maybe that had just been an easy excuse to spend time with ashton and ruth. it seemed like he got less and less of that these days. it didn't feel right, but he tried not to fight it. it's not like he was actually their brother in any sense that mattered. they probably got tired of him always watching a long time ago but his protectiveness over the duo had kept him in their gravity regardless.
"hey we've got a tight schedule kids," there was a bake sale or three eli was expected to contribute to plus all the christmas decorations were still in their storage bins. he looked at them with a big, expectant grin. "are we getting started in the kitchen or the attic?"

DIGGING DEEPER.
raised by a single mother in burnington, ruth was a rambunctious child, supposedly always destined for more. her mother insisted that there was greatness awaiting the young girl, some amorphous belonging that was attached to a family she never met, a father she never knew. it was always just the two of them between the walls of their rundown house. her mother was unable to keep a job for more than a year at a time, leaving a string of odd work and instability. as a result ruth was left to roam free, searching out ways to fill the hours of the days while she waited for her next meal— wherever it might come from. despite the hardship, ruth kept her chin up and a smile alight. what use would it have been to scream and cry, to point out that the hand she’d been dealt in life just wasn’t fair.
instead, she tucked herself into bed at night, cooked her own dinners, rationalized all the different reasons why she was alone and alone again. as she grew, she learned to look past all her mom’s failures. all the empty results that came of settling, of waiting for help, trying simply to get by. and, with the help of the ryder family, she managed not to go too far astray. they were the first to believe that she could work hard enough to achieve whatever dream she chose to set her sights on. she ran wild into their house, arms of books and conversation babbling on as only the young and inspired can. it was a brilliant few years, constructing the foundation of every bit of hard work that would turn into ruth’s career. but, as miraculously as they’d come into her life, the ryder house was one day silent.
she’d stayed up late into the night with the music on, reading a textbook too advanced to make sense of more than every other word. and in the morning, she’d stumbled bleary-eyed to the house, hoping for a breakfast of flashcards and conversation. instead, she’d found it dark and still. no one knew what happened to parents or son, and they refused to talk about it with her of all people. her life dimmed, her world narrowed to a single goal: to get into university as quickly as possible after that. despite her relative youth, she knew she could not stay stuck. the change in the neighborhood was stark, sending a shiver racking through her every time she looked at the ryders’ home. she poured all her efforts into her science classes, and was pushed into medical school, funneled to afterglow expediently.
having demonstrated an aptitude for not needing any parenting, her mother took note. the letter was on the kitchen table along with the house keys. in jagged scrawl, her mom explained that the only place left was with the children of the mothman. ruth has never tried to find her mother from that letter. she has no need to reach out and try and mend the bridge that was never fully stable to begin with. so collapsed, leaving the two women on opposite sides of a canyon. she had a career to look towards, there was no seismic shift in her final abandonment. in some ways, she’d been waiting for it her whole life.
the halls of afterglow have become home to her, and the people around her are as close as any family. they are, and have been, her lighthouse amidst the stormy sea. ruth has always been a person desperate for connection of any kind, the easiest of targets when it comes to keeping talented people around. she’s come to excel at surgery, specializing in whatever is asked of her, in whatever time frame might be given. she’s come to say yes, to just about anything that can be done, as long as they remember to frame it in the right moral light.
EXTRAS.
her favorite hobby is painting. she loves old pictures of water color paintings, and in another life she likes to say that she would have been an avante garde artist. she’s very involved in the creative scene when it’s possible, attending whatever events there are that invoke creativity.
she cuts her own hair, always has. she keeps a little cosmetology kit in her house, and would be happy to show off her skills to someone in need of a trim. although, nobody seems very keen to take her up on the offer…
she maintains her mother’s home in burnington, although she rarely has time to keep up with the space. her space is always cluttered, but it’s finally starting to radiate a warmth that it lacked throughout her childhood.
THE BARROW SIBLINGS.
(modern edit because bunny tried to find them all in period clothes and failed.)
in order of youngest to oldest: GIDEON, THOMAS, RUTH, PAUL.
gideon & paul take after their father, JOHN.
while thomas & ruth take after their mother, CORNELIA.
the barrow family hails from MANCHESTER, ENGLAND. the year was 1877. john barrow and cornelia dawson met while john apprenticed at the local clockmaker. cornelia was on a mission to repair her father’s pocket-watch, and the two felt the spark of love at first sight. often, cornelia would find herself in the shop to talk with john. the two married two years later, and john continued to rise in rank while cornelia found a job in textiles.
paul was born on APRIL 9TH, 1881. john wanted his son to follow in his footsteps of clockmaking, but paul was built strong and wide. he found more pleasure in working with his hands. paul left school at the age of FOURTEEN and went to work on his uncle’s farm in blackley. he still lived at home with the farm not being too far of a trek. as thomas got older, he and paul butt heads – especially when thomas had been taken under john’s wing for clockmaking. paul would call him delicate. after thomas left home, paul did not seek out his younger brother. paul DIED in france in 1917 during the war. he was THIRTY-SIX years old at the time of his death. he left behind a wife, KATHLEEN, and two children, ages 9 (SIMON) and 13 (LILY). ( in modern verses, he doesn’t die young. )
ruth was born on DECEMBER 3RD, 1883. ruth was incredibly bright in her youth, excelling well in school. cornelia wanted her to finish her studies, but john insisted she get a job early. ruth eventually joined her mother at the textile mill, but before she started working she became best friends with PHYLLIS BAXTER at school. she and phyllis were inseparable. thomas was closest to ruth; as he got older, he often would hang around her and phyllis. ruth fell in love with a local boy named HENRY CHAPMAN and married him. they had three children together, CHARLIE, SAMUEL, and DOROTHY. her and paul’s children grew up together and were very close. at the time thomas left home, he begged ruth to stay at her place – she denied him, having just given birth to her oldest son charles. she claimed she didn’t want him bringing any bad luck to their house. later, thomas wrote to ruth to inform her that he’d gotten a job at downton abbey as a footman. they continued to write to each other but only on rare occasion; thomas could not forgive her for turning him away.
thomas was born on NOVEMBER 17TH, 1891. cornelia suffered through three miscarriages before she finally gave birth to thomas; she initially deemed him as the miracle baby after fearing that she could no longer have children. john was a stern father of few words, but he took thomas under his wing when the boy showed interest in clockmaking. thomas realized he was gay early on while at school; the other boys would talk about girls, while he would think about them. there was another like him, CALLUM DONNELLY, whom he grew closer to over the years. he left school at fourteen just as paul had, but he would go to apprentice under his father at the clockmaker’s shop. john and cornelia (and paul) never liked how close thomas was to callum. john eventually caught them kissing, and thomas was thrown out of the house at the age of FIFTEEN. he never looked back.
gideon was born on MAY 28TH, 1895. cornelia had another miscarriage in between thomas and gideon before she gave birth to her youngest son. he, too, began to follow in john’s footsteps – and by the time thomas had left home ( or so he was told - only eleven when it occurred ) he became the favorite child. gideon had looked up to his older brother thomas, who showed him the basics of clockmaking when he was still very young. he later ended up taking over the shop after john retired. he married a woman named EMMA MORRIS and had a son named WHEELER.
