Buzzcocks at the Mayan
Saturday, May 28, 2016 Buzzcocks 40: I Left My Head in the pit at the Mayan… The Buzzcocks hit the stage on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the Mayan in downtown LA, and I was fortunate enough to be an active participant. (Their tour takes them to the Observatory in Santa Ana this evening, then on to Punk Rock Bowling in Las Vegas for the remainder of the holiday weekend.) Since I wasn’t attending PBR, I jumped at the opportunity to see them close to home. Ten minutes from door to venue to be exact! The Residuals from Philadelphia opened the night. This three-piece band from the east coast gave up some hard driving, gritty tunes while we waited for the main course. You can find them at https://www.facebook.com/Residuels. As with most openers, the crowd would rather belly up to the bar instead of hanging out in the area in front of the stage. One last round before the Buzzcocks! Our wait and bar tab was well worth it. They began the set with “Boredom” then on to “Fast Cars”. By the third tune, the pit was insane and continued to escalate from there on out. I mentioned in one of my Facebook posts that a rule I should have lived by is to stand one foot away from the pit for every year I was past 40. Nope, didn’t abide by that one. Yes, I was on the fringe. Yes, I had huge dudes crowd surfing over my head. Yes, I got clocked a few times, and HELL YES, it was worth it! Buzzcocks ended the set with “Noise Annoys”, “You Say You Don’t Love Me”, and “Times UP”, but we knew that wasn’t it…that wasn’t exactly what we came for. They came back out and gave us four more. By the first tune of the encore, my head popped off my shoulders, hit the Aztec Sun God at the top of the roof and ended up somewhere in the middle of the pit. What caused this sudden cerebral explosion? “What Do I Get?” of course! “Orgasm Addict” was next, and again more explosions from different body parts. (Insert winky face here!) “Ever Fallen In Love” and “Harmony in My Head” ended the night. I left the Mayan so satisfied and thankful that I didn’t miss the Buzzcocks this time around. PRB people, you are in for a treat! Wish I could be there with y’all.
