"Why else do Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses, get assassinated?" Ottilia asked rhetorically. "Power."
"If there are mages involved then it couldn't have been any of the noble families. They would sooner die than resort to using mages."
Ottilia reached down to hold up the blood smeared pendant of Agguid as she stared at it. "With the promise of enough power, people would go to far worse lengths than mages." She closed her hand tightly around the pendant with a scowl on her face. "They believe our entire lineage has been wiped out in a single evening; whoever emerges to claim the throne will be the one responsible for this betrayal."
They stood in silence for a few moments, both staring at the barely visible flames from the castle before they were suddenly snuffed out and the horizon went dark. An Elementalist then; they must have been powerful to snuff out a fire at that scale so easily. "Looks like the fire is out at last."
"Then our time is short. We need to keep moving. At worst they'll have horses and hounds to find us if they suspect the corpses in the room are not ours. We need to make enough distance and pray those clouds will bring a storm so that our trail will be harder to track."
