It was her seventeenth birthday. She made a big things out of her birthdays usually, but this year there was no fire in it. Her dad had just left her mom and she was having a hard time with it. The phone call with him had only made things worse. Caroline was perfect at hiding what was bubbling below the surface. When her friends would look at her they couldn't tell. But when they weren't looking, that's when it got really interesting. There was so much..... pain underneath. She sucked back whatever they handed her and giggled in front of the little fire. A birthday camping trip, to get away for a bit. She sat on the stump in her frayed shorts with a purple tank top on. Thank god it was the summer. She heard a twig break behind her and didn't even turn around to see who it was.
