OC profiles: Suumaya el-Amin and Ruul
Full Name: Lieutenant Junior Grade Sumayya Alya Shihab el-AminGender and Sexuality: Cis female; lesbianPronouns: She/hersEthnicity/Species: Arabic (Saudi) humanBirthplace and Birthdate: Bersallis III; Stardate 28780 (October 12, 2351)Guilty Pleasures: Adrenaline, Phobias: Court-martial, crabsWhat They Would Be Famous For: Sumayya has several citations for excellence for her piloting skills, and won several trophies in Academy competitions. What They Would Get Arrested For: Performing an unauthorized flyby of an Admiral’s daughter.OC You Ship Them With: Lieutenant RuulOC Most Likely To Murder Them: Lieutenant Commander Sotek. He wouldn’t murder her, per se, but even his vaunted Vulcan stoicism and patience wear thin in the face of Sumayya’s enthusiasm.Favorite Movie/Book Genre: Superhero stories. One of her grandmother’s prize possessions was an intact anthology of one of the first major Muslim superheroes in comic books published during the post-Eugenics War era; young Sumayya once got in trouble for cutting holes in her mother’s scarf and using it as a mask so she could pretend to be the dashing Ms. Marvel.Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: Unsurprisingly, Sumayya’s early love of classic comic books brought her to explore the genre more as she got older, and she discovered the wonders of 20th-century institutionalized racism as represented in popular culture, especially the anti-Arabic sentiment that arose across North America in the late 90s as a result of the Eugenics Wars. So generally speaking, racism as a trope or plot device leaves her fuming.Talents and/or Powers: Graduated from Starfleet Academy with the best flight simulator scores since Tom Paris; in her spare time as a first-class midshipman at the academy she began playing blues guitar. Why Someone Might Love Them: Sumayya is kind, compassionate, and earnest, always willing to be supportive of her friends. Why Someone Might Hate Them: She has a very profound adrenaline-junkie streak that occasionally gets her into trouble; she can get a little passive-aggressive, as she hates confrontation. She is a little more timid on the surface than her superiors would prefer. How They Change: Over the course of the story, Sumayya finds her confidence, and learns through bitter experience how to temper her more excitable nature. Why You Love Them: She’s a wide-eyed little gay cinnamon roll who can fly circles around just about anyone in space.
Full Name: Lieutenant Esea RuulGender and Sexuality: Female (technically one of the Caitian equivalents - while morphologically there are only two sexes among Caitians, there are numerous gendered divisions for both based on social status, environmental need, and cultural trends); pansexual (again, this is a human equivalent to a Caitian standard - sexual preferences among Caitians don’t usually map to the human concept of a gender binary, and culturally speaking they aren’t anywhere near modern human heteronormativity, especially because sexual activity and procreation are two distinct activities).Pronouns: She/hersEthnicity/Species: Caitian (Plains brood)Birthplace and Birthdate: Cait (aka Ferasa); Stardate 23317 (April 26, 2347)Guilty Pleasures: Raw meat. Replicators just can’t get it right, and when on shore leave (or even an away mission, in the right environment) she will absolutely wander off into the wilderness for a few hours to kill something and devour it.Phobias: Being declawed. Going bald. What They Would Be Famous For: Ruul was a champion wrestler and marksman in the Academy, and has participated in several krav maga tournaments since receiving her commission. What They Would Get Arrested For: Hunting without a permit.OC You Ship Them With: Lieutenant el-AminOC Most Likely To Murder Them: Lieutenant Tykia Zonn, the Bolian chief of Operations. They could not be more opposite in temperament if one were an electron and one were a positron. Favorite Movie/Book Genre: Travelogues.Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: Any of the numerous feats of martial improbability found in action films. She’s a stickler for realism.Talents and/or Powers: General Caitian physiological traits (expanded senses of sight, hearing, smell, etc., including limited thermographic and night vision; retractable claws); excellent aim with various firearms both common and uncommon, including chemical slugthrowers; she has learned to grill a mean steak in deference to other Federation species’ preferences for cooked meat. Why Someone Might Love Them: She is honest and forthright to the people she respects - to be fair, it’s hard to hide your feelings when you have what amounts to an emotional barometer sticking out of your butt. Why Someone Might Hate Them: Racial prejudice. Also, she comes off as kind of a jerk, especially to anyone who isn’t used to cats. How They Change: Ruul is a universal constant. All she ever does is get more awesome. Why You Love Them: Giant gay cat lady. What more needs be said?
Lt. Ruul: 1, 9, 16, 49
1. What’s their full name? Why was that chosen? Does it mean anything?
Ruul. Caitians don’t have particularly long names. It was chosen because it sounded vaguely cat-like.
9. Do animals like them? Do they get on well with animals?
Generally speaking, she gets on well with mammalian species. Avians are suspicious of her, what with her being a two-meter-tall bipedal feline and all. Reptiles are ambivalent.
16. Do they collect anything? What do they do with it? Where do they keep it?
She has a collection of river stones that she’s found on various away missions over the course of her career with Starfleet. She keeps them in a rock garden on its own table in her quarters; one of her academy instructors (specifically her Survival Strategies teacher, Yomiko Takashi) taught her about Zen rock gardens, and she found the idea aesthetically appealing. She has since found that meditation can be difficult with her restless nature, but it is a useful tool.
49. What is their most valued object? Are they sentimental? Is there something they have to take everywhere with them?
Caitian adolescents go through a coming-of-age ritual where they stalk and kill a wild rraytahk - a predatory bird around the size of a Terran wild boar. Generally speaking, Caitians keep some kind of trophy from the hunt, although it isn’t always a piece of the rraytahk’s corpse; sometimes the hunt can last for several days, and a Caitian may keep the survival knife that helped them cut wood to make a shelter, or a leaf from a tree that they hid in as they waited for their prey. The choices of keepsake from this trial speak volumes about the Caitian in question.
Ruul kept her rraytahk’s skull. It’s a display piece on the wall of her quarters. Sometimes she just looks at it and starts purring.
THIS is the kind of quality content i look for on songmeanings
i might do a little write-up with my thoughts/feelings/headcanons plus some actual true things about this album soon because i’ve listened to it such a lot.
