Never have I felt so Canadian as on Saturday, watching my cousin's sledge hockey tournament whilst battling arena internet connection to get updates on the Women's Rugby World Cup Canada vs. Australia game. We won! But now omg...I cannot even handle the thought of the semi-final against NZ this Friday. Ughhhhh. It's so exciting but so stressful at the same time!
the womens rugby (world cup) is so fucking sick - so proud of my country in times like this. we won't win but god damn have we played some good rugby
who do i need to speak to in terms of me being hannah botterman when i grow up it's soso important that i speak to someone who can make this happen
The first match of the Rugby World Cup (women’s obviously) starts in 4 days and I need y’all to tune in to some matches. Here’s a list of why you should watch:
Support women’s sports! There are still teams playing in this World Cup where they are not “professional” players or they are at risk of losing the professional status ie they do not have paid full-time contracts. By watching the games you are showing that there is demand and that the players deserve contracts
It’s so unbelievably gay! Yes even gayer than football/soccer with at least 188 out of 512 players being openly queer (unofficial just based on obvious statements in the media/they've publicly dated women) with 3 teams (England, Italy, Scotland) having a majority of players being queer. So if you get a crush on some players you’re not ruled out (I support your delusions) and not to reduce the players to their looks but they are all very attractive
It’s a honestly a great sport! What’s not to love about watching 15 players on each team run into each other with an egg shaped ball? Okay but seriously there’s a bit of everything and the pace of the game means you can actually watch what’s happening in real time without the need for specific slowed down camera angles. There’s a real mix of skills and tactics played such as the strength needed in scrums to kicks up and down the pitch to throws in from the sideline where they literally launch players into the air to catch the ball. It’s an exciting sport through and through (also what other sport has such funny position names like tight-head, loose-head, hooker yes that’s a real position, flanker, and lock)
It’s better than American football! Yes I’m purposefully rage baiting my US American friends with this one BUT you can only fight me on this IF you watch a couple of games of the tournament. Listen I’ve watched some NFL games and it’s just boring to me, plus I’m not local enough to any of the teams to get invested that way. From start to finish a match will only take up 2hrs of your time so you don’t even have to commit your whole day!
The players are very personable! You’ve got icons like Ilona Maher, Meg Jones, and Rhona Lloyd to name just a few. They’re very active on social media beyond just posting about their sport; they’re into fashion, some do crochet, or tiktok trends, DITLs, and just generally muck about online—it’s very easy to like them
It’s pretty inclusive of body types! If you’re tired of not seeing people that look like you play sports then let me tell you rugby could be the sport that scratches that itch. Sort of scrawny? Look at the wingers. You’re stocky/strong? Well you might just belong on the front row. You’re a bit lanky and taller than all your mates? You’ll always have a place among the backs <3. All body shapes and sizes are valued and play a crucial role
I want to talk to people about this! It’s a World Cup it literally only happens once every 4 years and I just want to chat with people about it lol. It’s being hosted in England this time so pretty central in terms of world timezones and if not you can just watch the highlights online/on social media
Oh but Z I don’t know the rules of rugby how will I know what’s going on?? Here are 3 basic rules that will allow you to know pretty much most of what happens on the pitch: 1. You run forward (obvious) 2. You pass the ball backwards 3. Tackles should technically be made below shoulder height That’s pretty much it, you don’t have to know tactics, there’s no switching of players between defensive and offensive plays, the matches are 80mins long and they are actually playing for that time (American football I’m looking at you here), if the ref makes a decision you usually can hear what they’re saying so you can understand what calls are made (football/soccer I’m looking at you) so all in all you should at least give watching a match a go no matter the team
What on earth was going through Berthoumieu’s head when she bit Wafer?!? Like what is the need?! She fully grabbed the arm to pull it back and took a chomp
Girl WHAT and you could see the impression it made (through the gumshield mind you) when she lets go. I seriously hope she gets more than a couple weeks ban for that
Sports? WOMEN'S Sports!
This week was crazy. Like I believed in our team and I was surprised from commenters and pundits by how few seemed to understand this Team Canada's style, drive, and persistence. Like, I know the Black Ferns are THAT team, always have been and always will be, but like Canada, this year, is so unique and so freaking capable! I didn't think we were viewed as such "underdogs" after ranking 2nd overall worldwide this year and been winning every game just like the Ferns have been so far. No one ever pays attention to Canada, ha!

Best of luck to your girls. Hoping for a great match! 🏉 🍁 🌹
This weekend was wild! I had an excellent time at the watch party, met new friends to watch future matches. A few of them suggested going to the local uni rugby matches to support the women's team so I'm def jazzed about that! And then yesterday the Fever forced a Game 5 in the WBNA semi-finals which is just crazy!
It was SUCH a good game and like, I just didn't want a blow out and it was not that. It was a hard, sustained fight by both sides and it's clear that the England team and the experience and the strength needed to win. They were the clear winner BUT Canada was the clear contender to make them work for that win and it was beautiful.
And then to top it off the attending crowd was just under 82,000! A world record it's the second highest attendance for a rugby game in BOTH woman and men leagues!
So this year I think really brought new eyes to the women's game and I think that'll continue. The news definitely hit the airwaves here in Canada and we had a famous musician from a beloved Canadian band, The Tragically Hip, help promote another fundraising initiative with these sweet rugby jerseys that are already sold out. That's fantastic!
Thank you for asking!
