A fellow Kreg aficionado recently asked me if my Foreman has eliminated the need for my other Kreg jigs. My answer is "Absolutely not." Although the Foreman is an incredible tool that I use almost daily, there are certain situations where using the Foreman would be impossible, or at least awkward. For example, I often use Kreg joinery to stabilize splits and cracks on the no-show side of reclaimed boards. I can precisely position the Kreg R3 with a screw right where I need it, even at an angle. Slowly but surely, JackClamps are taking over my workshop. My beloved grandfather was a virtuoso with a whetstone. He could put a razor-sharp edge on any blade, and he didn't need a fancy-schmancy honing guide to do it. Although I inherited his appreciation of sharp blades, I didn't inherit his freehand skills with a whetstone. That's why I love this Deulen sharpening jig. It holds my jointer blades at the perfect angle for sharpening as I simply move it back and forth against 6 descending grits of sandpaper, starting with 120 and ending with 400. After just a few minutes, I have super sharp jointer blades. If you usually pay for professional sharpening, this jig will pay for itself very quickly. (Deulen also makes a longer jig for planer blades, but I haven't used that one.) I like using sanding sponges because they're flexible enough to conform to the uneven surfaces of #reclaimedwood. By applying a little pressure, I can force the sanding surface below and between ridges and into other low areas. The day began like any other day, but when the old man pushed the first narrow board toward the rapidly spinning blade, the table saw sensed that something was different. (The old man and the saw had been together for many years, so they knew each other well.) As he always does, the old man was working carefully, but he seemed to be less nervous and more confident. The saw detected none of the usual trepidation as the old man's non-replaceable fingers approached dozens of hungry carbide-tipped teeth. The saw was puzzled. Why was the old man so calm? Did he forget about the horrific injuries that can happen to inattentive woodworkers? Then, suddenly, the saw caught a glimpse of something that explained everything. The old man was using a GRR-ripper. The saw smiled as it realized that the old man will stay attached to his precious fingers for many more years.
