Meet Ryan Cohen @ryancohen
A proud Canadian Jewish entrepreneur, bold activist investor, and the “Meme King” who revolutionized e-commerce and retail investing.
He founded Chewy, the online pet supplies powerhouse sold for $3.35 billion, and now serves as Chairman and CEO of
@gamestop, the iconic retailer at the center of the meme stock revolution.
Born in 1986 in Montreal to a Jewish family, Cohen grew up inspired by his father Ted, an entrepreneur who ran a glassware importing business and instilled a relentless work ethic and focus on delayed gratification.
Cohen skipped college entirely, citing his entrepreneurial roots over formal education.
At just 15, he launched his first venture collecting referral fees from e-commerce sites.
In 2011, at age 25, Cohen founded Chewy, inspired by his poodle Tylee and a passion for exceptional customer service.
Rejected by over 100 VCs initially, he built it into the top online pet retailer:
• Grew revenue to $3.5 billion by 2018
• Emphasized obsession with customers: hand-written notes, pet portraits, sympathy flowers
• Sold to PetSmart for $3.35 billion in 2017 the largest e-commerce acquisition ever at the time
• Stepped down as CEO in 2018 to focus on family and new pursuits
Serial Investor & Activist
Cohen didn’t stop at Chewy—he became a force in activist investing through RC Ventures:
• GameStop (GME): In 2020, took a ~13% stake (~$76M investment), became the largest individual shareholder, joined the board, and pushed for digital
transformation. Sparked the 2021 meme stock frenzy, turning retail investors into a powerful movement. Became Chairman and CEO in 2023, taking no salary while leading the turnaround.
• Bed Bath & Beyond: Acquired ~10% stake in 2022, agitated for changes (including potential sale), then exited profitably ($70M gain).
• Significant holdings in Apple (once the largest individual shareholder), Alibaba (built to ~$1B stake, pushing for buybacks), and others like Wells Fargo and Netflix.
Beyond Business
Cohen is a vocal critic of DEI policies, “wokeness,” and certain political trends, while championing shareholder value and bold conviction-based moves. He keeps family life private, resides in Florida, and remains a dedicated Montreal Canadiens fan.
From teenage entrepreneur → Chewy founder → meme stock catalyst → GameStop CEO,
Ryan Cohen’s story is about customer obsession, contrarian bets, mobilizing retail power, and building (or transforming) companies with unrelenting focus.

There’s my definitive list. Don’t ask the why’s because I’m sure you could narrow that part down. Morgan’s a total hunk, Hunter’s a total flop! Everyone else is simply in between.
