Their Importance: The show was written by Ryan O’Connell a disabled and gay man, adapted from his autobiography. There’s focus on internalized ableism (the only time I’ve seen the subject actually brought up in a show), the difficulties of finding an accepting partner in a body-focused, ableist world and the physical difficulty of having sex when your body doesn’t have the same range of motion as an able-bodied person (which doesn’t stop Ryan from having a semi-graphic on-screen sex scene which is still vanishingly rare for disabled characters). Most significantly Ryan can’t be considered “sweet” or “pure” in any way and is frequently downright unpleasant- which is a very deliberate subversion of the inspiration porn ideal. Acknowledging that disabled people have any kind of sexuality and having disabled creators involved in creating disabled stories is still shamefully rare, let alone graphically and realistically portraying the realities of being gay and disabled and having a disabled lead actor/producer/writer.
