Before I talk about Nashville, let me fill you in on a little concert I attended Wednesday December 6th at Terminal West in Atlanta. Terminal West is a pleasent little venue located about 15 minutes from my house. I haven't really had the opportunity to go there as often as I'd like to because I've come to find that the venue caters to a more select type of genre (electronic, funk, dubstep, etc.) which I am not especially fond of. I do, however, love the venue and I've never encountered a single unpleasent staff member and they do something called a "craft beer grab bag" where you receive a randomly selected craft beer for a flat price of $5 which is a really fun and cheaper alternative if you love craft beer. Anyway! The concert I was attending was Pokey LaFarge who was accompanied by an opener called The Easy Leaves. The Easy Leaves are a country duo from California and they write, record, and perform incredible songs. Each song felt like a different chapter in a book to me- meticulously written to invoke a different emotion each time yet still capturing that good ole country sound. During Pokey's performance they joined the crowd themselves to help spark movement in the crowd. They seem like not only great musicians but incredibly fun people to have a beer with. I discovered Pokey a few years ago and was really surprised and influenced by his old-time sound. His catchy tunes make me wish I knew how to swing dance or pack up a bag and hichhike around the country. "Something in the Water" was the easiest way to get absolutely hooked and there's an NPR live performance of "Hard Times Come and Go" that made me stop dead in my tracks. Earlier this year I had traveled to Nashville to see him at the Mercy Lounge and was blown away. It was blatantly obvious that Pokey is known and very welcome in Nashville and you could feel how comfortable he was being there in the way that he sang. The floor was shaking and everybody was movin' - it was a show I'll not soon forget. When I saw the opportunity to attend another show in my hometown I jumped on it. Unfortunately Pokey's band member Ryan Koenig was unable to attend the show due to an accident in South Carolina. He was struck on the sidewalk by a vehicle and is currently still recovering in the hospital. (If you are able to contribute you can by donate to his medical fund here
