SteelDrivers Co-founder Mike Henderson Dies at 70
Multi-instrumentalist Mike Henderson, co-founder of the SteelDrivers, songwriting partner of Chris Stapleton and Nashville staple with a decades-long Bluebird residency, has died.
“Although Mike was in very good health, he died peacefully in his sleep” Sept. 22, Henderson’s wife, Janet, said in a statement.
“Myself and our daughters are devastated, but we know we can get through this with all your love for Mike that we are basking in.”
Henderson, whom Rounder Records eulogized as “a brilliant songwriter and musician,” was 70. He’d been playing a weekly residency at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe since the mid-1980s and “became such a piece of the club’s fabric that his loss has truly taken our collective breath away,” the venue’s management said.
“It feels like the walls of the club might just crumble.”
Henderson co-founded the SteelDrivers, who released their debut on Rounder in 2008. He left the band in 2011 and went on to co-write such Stapleton hits as “Broken Halos” and “Starting Over,” with his former SteelDrivers bandmate.
“All the SteelDrivers, past and present, are in shock today as we have lost our original architect,” the band said in a statement.

Sarah Jarosz – Webster Hall – September 27, 2021
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Sarah Jarosz isn’t one to rest on her laurels. Not even a year after putting out the Grammy-winning World on the Ground, the former New York City resident returned with her sixth studio long-player, Blue Heron Suite, this past spring. “It’s tempting to say that Jarosz has made her masterpiece, but then again, with one so young, it’s too soon to be certain,” raves American Songwriter. “However one thing is clear … she’s clearly come close.” It’s safe to say that everyone at Webster Hall last night agrees.
