This paper aims to briefly outline the maturation of the past from Archaic to Classical Greece: how it changed (as it passes from guild of Homeric bards to the pen of Herodotus) from something tangible, communal, and phenomenological, to something resembling an epistemological puzzle. I see Herodotus as a watershed moment in the development of not only the historiographical tradition, but the western epistemological condition, which began to harbour great scepticism against the invisible, the unseen, and the poetic. I aim to trace the changing modality of the past to the emergence of democracy in 5th century Athens, which brought out a profound intellectual and ontological transformation that culminated in the emergence of the “citizen”: a thinking, deliberating agent of meaning who must participate in a new episteme."
