Night of the Reaper (2025)
Happy Birthday Amanda Tapping!!! 🖤
Pax Romana with an unexpected twist
Okay I have to write another meta post because my younger self was Big Dumb and did not notice how brilliant the nonverbal storytelling is at the end of "For King & Country." I've said this before but if you mute Helen and Nikola's scenes there is almost always a totally separate conversation happening via their body language and facial expressions that says more than what they're saying out loud because AT and JY are just such good actors they gave 1000000% to every one of their scenes
Like if you watch their expressions closely, when Nikola starts explaining what he was up to with the charter, he gets this look on his face like "You know exactly where I'm going with this and I'm doing it for your own good," and Helen responds with a look that's like "Yes I do know and I hate it, how could you?" Then there's this softness in his eyes that's like "I know you hate it and I'm sorry but I am trying to save your life because you're too stubborn to do it yourself and I am not going to lose you" and she gets mad like "I can't believe you're doing this" but then just resigns herself to the situation because she knows he's outmaneuvered her. Like he knows she's going to hate him for it, he's sorry that he has to do it this way, but he'd rather her hate him and be alive than die on his watch 😭 Also I LOVE the way this scene is blocked. Scene blocking can often have visual symbolism and I feel like maybe that's what they were going for here? Henry, Will, and John are all on one side of the room while Helen is on the other, signifying their disagreement on the map issue. Then Nikola walks in and stands directly in between both sides, signifying that he's going to be the one to mediate the situation. This plus the close-ups also frame them as being separate from the group behind them, signaling that a) they're having a nonverbal conversation about saving her life that the others aren't privy to, and b) out of everyone in that room, even John, Nikola is the one who knows Helen the best and therefore knows the most effective response to the situation. John doesn't put two and two together until Nikola spells it out, while Helen knows right from the start what he's up to and why he's doing it. This next point might be me reading too much bias into it, but there's also a slightly different vibe to the tension between her and John at the beginning of the scene vs. the the tension between her and Nikola at the end of it (again, a lot of this is a credit to the acting - Chris, Amanda, and Jonathon were amazing in this show). The former feels like two people butting heads because they're not understanding each other or on the same page, whereas the latter feels more like two people who are butting heads because they do understand each other and one party (Helen) is upset that the other (Nikola) figured out exactly how to force her hand.
Anyway the whole scene is genius storytelling and I'm so annoyed at my younger self for not picking up on it and getting upset because I thought they made it look like Nikola didn't care that Helen was dying due to him not appearing more obviously distressed. It's actually the exact opposite, he was fighting for her life but doing it in a really subtle way
Have you seen Scorched Earth (2018)?

how dare they!! I can't even - ahhh!!! good lord! and there's a freakin part 2 but they don't tell us when! well technically it's part 3 since it started in Last Stand but yea. I can't believe the implication of thomas being killed!! I thought he'd make it out of every movie. but can also understand him sacrificing himself for brandon. the rest of it was alot of politics, action, but the action was amazing as always. brandon & zero did a practice sparring and brandon acted like zero got him in the injured side zero goes "why you gotta mess with my emotions like that". I agree! I know they wanna protect her and intel pete but the only way out of this is if he calls LD 'cause as much as they don't want her in danger with the price on her head she's literally the only one better than him who can get both of them out besides thomas or the colonel. i'm really not surprised zondi turned on brandon. sorry but I never trusted any of the newbies besides the axe twins who were killed last time. I don't trust nova anymore either. he's currently helping them but you can tell he will flip at any time. I don't blame his anger at yuki for killing his dadbut as many as she's killed being an assassin she has had bad stuff happen why she is the way she is. I LOOVE the end cliffy of brandon tied up and hanging, I'm soo AUing that lol. oh I do really like frost! I hope he sticks around and is trustworthy
