headcanon that since mother’s day is on different days in the u.k. and the u.s., that every year ashley and henry celebrated it twice, so twice a year they make helen a card and leave a vase of her favorite flowers on her desk (open to suggestions as to what her favorite flower might be lol)
the first mother’s day after ashley died (the british one, i think, since that one comes first in the year), henry isn’t sure if/how he should continue the tradition, bc even though helen literally raised him he still feels like it’d be too presumptuous to call her his mom, and ashley was always the one who wrote ‘happy mother’s day’ on the cards.
he decides to go through with it himself anyway, bc even though ashley’s gone now helen is still her mother and that’s never gonna change, and she deserves to have that acknowledged. so he gets up early and sneaks into her office, hoping to leave the flowers and card anonymously, but helen is also awake early (bc it’s mother’s day and ofc she can’t sleep) and she sees him putting them on her desk.
henry is afraid she’ll be mad or upset, but she just pulls him in for a hug and holds him for a long time without saying anything. two months later for american mother’s day, they do the same thing again, and every year after that. it’s both a mourning ritual for ashley and an acknowledgement that for all intents and purposes helen is henry’s mother, and he’s her son.
