Hope and Bass Featured Artist: Ryan Start
Our 8th installment of the Hope and Basscast is from Detroit's own Ryan Start. Check out this dark banging house mix and read the quick interview we were able to do with him. Nothing but love to this dude. He's one of the most underrated dj's around and it's incredibly surprising we don't see his name on flyers every weekend. Give em some love!!
I was born and raised in the Metro-Detroit area. I currently reside within the Detroit city limits.
Who got you into making dance music and djing?
I have always enjoyed music of all genre. I guess what got me into djing and making dance music was the first dance event I went to. At that time they were known as raves. Something about the environment or the energy got me hooked. I went out and bought 2 turntables, a mixer, and dance records.
Do You have any shows coming up?
No, the calendar is clear. I have nothing booked right now. I have been taking time to work on a few other projects. I am getting ready to put together the new press kit and get back out there.
When is your next release?
As far as dates go, I don't know off the top of my head. I do know I have a single dropping on BassRoots Records in the near future. I also have a few singles and EP's coming to Convergent Sound Recordings this winter and into spring. Also remixes as I get them.
Since we are advocates for mental health awareness, how do you feel about more labels and artists giving back to different social issues?
I think that it is a god thing. Its good to give what you can, when you can, to help those in a tough spot. We all need help with something at some point.
What's up with the mix? What was your intention going into recording it?
Fun. Plain and simple. I had a stressful last couple of weeks and needed to release. I set up, selected the first track, pressed record, pressed play, and just had fun grabbing tunes I've been enjoying lately and seeing if I could make them work together. Control vinyl were used in the making, one take, no edits. I have more fun doing it that way, and just hope that it translates.
Are you on any other labels or affiliated with any other companies/crews etc?
I have done work with/for/on Detox, Convergent Sound, Massive Florida, Massive Detroit, DYLA Recordings, and BassRoots.
Who is your favorite person to perform with, and who is your favorite so far in the studio?
I would have to say Nano2Hype for both accounts there. We have a project together called Cafe Con Leche. (we were using it before Craze and Klever) We work well together and not only have fun, but are able to feed off of each others creative energy.
Was dance music your first love of music, or were you into other things that led you to dance music?
Yes, yes it was. Then I cheated on it with punk, metal, rock, hip-hop, and a few others. But I came back, and dance music took me back with open arms. We have a healthy, love/hate, open relationship.
