We just announced our hiatus has come to an end. With that being said, we are taking submissions for music to be put out on our site. If you are a producer or DJ and want your music on Hope and Bass please send us a message below.

Hope and Bass hiatus has come to an end...

So the last few months I have been dealing with a lot at my old job (which I left) and it led me to audit myself and what I wanted to do with my life. I needed to change things. During the hiatus from working on Hope and Bass I came to the realization that this right here is what I want to be doing. Running multiple websites, documenting music and culture in my community, and pushing different ideas into the world to better help the people we encounter.

I didn't know what the next phase of Hope and Bass was going to be until today. I still want to run this as a media outlet and specifically cover dance music.

I also am running my own media outlet called SHRBRT.com. Check it out. I will be running concurrent postings between the two. So you will see different types of music posts that might not define dance music. I am opening both sites to cover whatever I feel like. The artist collective is still as strong as ever. Most of our artists are still pushing in their respective fields. I am super proud of all of them too.

I just wanted to let everyone know that we will be coming back in a few short weeks to regular posts and features. So if you want to submit your material to be put on our site, please send us a message at [email protected]. Do not message us on facebook or twitter. Send us an email with a link to your music and what music you want to be reviewed or promoted, and we will get back to you. If you hear nothing back, it's safe to say we passed on your work. Don't get discouraged. Keep at it! Anyway, here'es to 2017!

Gallery: The Story So Far @ Van's Warped Tour In Auburn Hills, MI, July 22nd

Every few years I come across a band who grows on me more and more each day. It starts with one song and then I decide I really dig it so I find another and another and so on. The last few bands were all in the pop-punk genres. Although The Story So Far has a lot more of a progressive and less poppy sound to them. They have ballads and softer songs, but they have more heart than pretty much most bands out there today. Of course, this is my personal preference but it allows you to understand why I had such an emotional time shooting them at Warped Tour's Auburn Hills stop at The Palace.

It really is something else when music reminds you that you're going to be alright, in a way conversations and actions just can't sometimes. So here's the pictures I took during their first three songs, "All Wrong" followed by "The Glass" and "Nerve". The rest of the set included Quicksand, Solo, Empty Space, Heavy Gloom, Things I Can't Change, and Roam. Incredible.

Emarosa threw down one of the best sets I have seen in a long time. They have had several incarnations of the band but the current lineup and sound are on another level. So here are some photos from their set at the Auburn Hills stop of the Van's Warped Tour.

GALLERY: New Found Glory @ Van's Warped Tour in Auburn Hills, MI, July 22nd

New Found Glory is a band I have listened to since I was a teenager, mind you I am 33. They will never get old to me, and that was apparent with the now 4-piece running the stage like they were in their early 20s again. That's the shit that inspires me to want to continue making music and more importantly for me to continue documenting my time within all the different sub-cultures the music industry has to offer. I have always shifted between different groups of people so this is no surprise that my musical taste would eventually start to bear the same nature as my social skill set. Enough of that, let's get to the pictures of the pop-punk legends.

GALLERY: Movement 2016

Movement 2016 was one of the best editions of this festival that I have been too. Musically I only heard a few fuck ups. I don't remember hearing anything that sounded terrible like clipping that I seemed to hear on every stage last year. I didn't see a single fight and only saw one person have a freak out. Watching a guy wake up to a bunch of huge DPO's, Border Patrol, and EMT's surrounding him was more entertaining than most of the people watching that went on throughout the weekend. Take care of yourselves when your on that shit! Especially in 90 degree weather.

My favorite sets came from Caribou, Big Freedia, J.Phlip, Loco Dice, Marshall Applewhite, Kraftwerk 3D, Kenny Dope, Dam Funk, The Friend, Brian Gillespie, Mark Moss, Justin Martin, The Black Madonna, RZA w/ Stone Mecca, Kill The Noise, Dilemma, Lee Curtiss, Adam Beyer, Modeselektor, MK, Calico, Tini!, Mister Joshooa, and Dub Phizix and MC Strategy.

LISTEN: Bungle - Enclosure

Off the upcoming Sounds of Sao Paulo EP from Soul Trader Records is Bungle's massive liquid and atmospheric tune "Enclosure". This is a really beautiful song guaranteed to get you moving your feet and shaking your ass. I can't help but follow the liquid guys whether they're from right here in Detroit or Brazil or the UK or New Zealand, there's something about this sound that does it for me. "Enclosure" is no different and just adds to my admiration of Bungle and the Brazilian drum and bass producers and DJ's. Also on the EP are Duoscience and Maurs, Nitri and Simplification, Translate and Masterwizard. It's all about the instrumentals that can carry themselves through the entire length of the track that most vocal tracks achieve. "Enclosure" does exactly what I need new tunes to do for my psyche, calm me down, fasten my seat-belt, and take me for a trip. It's a great testament to Bungle's production ability, I really cannot wait to hear the rest of this EP, hopefully some of you feel the same and go out and get it whenever it drops (tbd).

LISTEN: Conrank - Hood Shake [Out April 26th on Liquid Amber]

This massive tune comes from Shanghai's own Conrank. I love trap tunes that don't depend solely on the buildups and breakdowns. Songs that make me want to go ape-shit for a few minutes instead of for 2 15 second drops over the course of 3 or 4 minutes. For me that's my biggest problem with a lot of mainstream dance music, the downtime. Keep the beat fucking going for fucks sake, don't give people an excuse to stop dancing. This is exactly what Conrank does on "Hood Shake" which is being dropped on DJ Shadow's label Liquid Amber next Tuesday, April 26th. Conrank has worked with DJ Shadow, Subp Yao, Bleep Bloop, Doshy, Goldfinger. DJ Support : DJ Shadow, Gaslamp Killer, Buku, Starkey, DJ Snake, G Jones, Doshy to name but a few.

An update on the future of Hope and Bass

Hey guys, Chris here... I wanted to update the world on what the future holds for Hope and Bass. As you know we started out as a baked out idea on the couch a couple years ago. Reveling in the after Movement Festival 2014 buzz, (I covered the festival for Party Life) it opened my mind big time. I decided to start a record label and it was called Hope and Bass. While coming up with the roster of dj's I wanted to see produce and producers I wanted to release tunes by, I found that it was really easy for me to write about this music. I then came up with the website and started utilizing more of my writing capabilities. About 5 months after the original idea I launched the website and it became really obvious to me that I could start covering music and events the way I already was for other companies and websites. So now the idea of it being more than a record label and artist collective came into play. The whole time my idea of profiting was hilarious. I figured any money that would come in would just go right back to releases or to charities for suicide prevention. I half-assed pieced together a compilation that never really got off the ground. It was then I realized I could just keep writing and taking pictures of artists and I will post about mental health causes too. So no longer was it about writing music or finding music to release, it became more about finding music to promote because it was really good and if I felt that strong about it, then maybe I should promote it even more. I realized I wasn't a label-head, at least not yet. I realized I was just another broker writer, photographer, and musician. It hasn't stopped me from continuing this venture. So our future as a record label is pretty much over. All the artists can retain their artist affiliations but from here on out, our main focus and goal is to be a fully functioning music media outlet. One that doesn't just cover dance music either. Hope doesn't have to necessarily be tied to only mental health, as Bass does not only have to be tied to bass music. Thank you for staying around. Thank you for not being too condescending in your comments online. Our Facebook is pretty much done with. We get more views and reach through our other networks to the point where it's a waste of time to even be on Facebook. If 200 people see a post on Facebook, 10,000 will see it on twitter. I love you all and I hope all the artists and affiliates understand that I have been doing this whole thing by myself and I expect nothing from anyone about this. I just want a place to keep writing about music and I want to broaden my horizons for both this idea and for my future. I also am looking to expand in photography, so if you ever need a photographer for promo pics or an event, get at me! I apologize for this not being what it was originally meant to be. With that being said, if you send me your tunes, if I dig it, I will totally feature it on Hope and Bass. LISTEN: Impish & Joakuim - Sanne (Impish Mix)

We originally were going to post about this tune last month but it seems the release got delayed a little...

Impish and Joakuim teamed up for a really dope tone called Sanne, although the original is great my preference aligns itself with Impish's remix. I really enjoy the EP that this is a part of. The track by Facing Jinx and Total Science's remix of Phaction's tune Stratos make for a full release worthy of your hard earned dough.
