Ryan Wong - The New Country Sounds of Ryan Wong
This one came out last year, but a friend only recently recommended it to me — and it is terrific, full of breezy melodies, winningly shambolic arrangements and clever wordplay. As its title tells us, New Country Sounds sees Ryan Wong (who may be better known as a Bay Area psych/garage kinda dude) moving into more rootsy territories. There's a winking attitude throughout, a wry/dry humor, but it's never anything less than charming; Wong isn't mocking country music at all, he's finding his own idiosyncratic way into the tradition, and having a totally fun time in the process.
