Captain Axel and his platoon leaders gathered next to the lead tank in the column. Twenty-four vehicles crammed the company assembly area, their hulls angular and menacing in the dying light. Extra boxes of ammo, rations, and sensor-scattering nets filled the bustle racks with additional equipment strapped to the hulls. The convoy resembled a string of deadly pack mules loaded for war. “We look ready, but are we?”
