he doesn’t understand why they continue to resist? could they not see the gift that he sought to provide them? the gift he sought to give to the very planet they continued to drain life from? ( death. it is the only gift ⎯⎯⎯ or is it more of a slaughter? ⎯⎯⎯ that he knows how to give ). regardless of what they saw, it was time for humanity to end ⎯⎯⎯ mother had demanded it so and he was ever her architect. he would give humanity the end that they deserved after so many years: to become one with one of the last of the planet’s children so he could properly fix this world. ironic wasn't it? ( foolish creatures, have you not heard of reaping what you sow? ). the man ⎯⎯⎯ or was it monster? one found it hard to tell the difference between the two these days ⎯⎯⎯ began to chuckle darkly to himself, throwing his head back as he stood amidst the ruins of his people. it was another reminder of humanity’s cowardice; another reminder of the crime that humanity had failed to be given retribution for ( but have no fear mother ; judgement day is finally upon us ).

the puppet and the sympathizer would arrive soon and the thought made the hero / human / creature nearly euphoric. he would soon get what he had sought after for so very long: the black materia. it's summoning would bring the end of this planet’s life and the birth of a new and better one: his.

( and oh, how glorious would it be ! )

WHAT GAZE BEFALLS he? Is it one that is of circumstantial bewilderment && basic curiosity? Or is it some underlying condescension? For she herself has bore witness to the lackluster disapproval in his gaze, the waning from side deemed wrong. He’s fighting a war on the wrong front---she sees it in his eyes. && her ability to detect such a thing comes with an unapologetic air && the certainty that she, too, has experienced such a feeling all the same. Was guilt not one of the most humane ways of thinking? To draw regret on the horizon of what is demanded, that which combats in an everlasting struggling between right && wrong.

&& whosoever may have spoken first on a more comfortable ground, nerves untouched by the ongoing turmoil they’ve been subjected to && lighter, it goes ignored. For this is not some tender moment; it isn’t a place where the guard may be let down && the lashes lay low against cheekbones in rest. This is war && war does not forgive, does not hold prejudice, && mercy is hardly discernible from a simply quick death. More over in the way he’d looked upon a particular comrade, one brawler to be exact he'd rescued, like the rest who can’t remember what they’ve forgotten. The memories are lost, but the feelings still yet linger naturally.

“Fighting your own to save the enemy---,” be not fooled; her fingertips itch to snatch blade free of its scabbard should it be necessary. The fight resonates through her bones still yet, “---having second thoughts?”

how odd it is, that the words he hears strikes him like a dull blade, straight through the flesh of his monstrous body, to his heart that still beats (yet with an echo of inhumanity, lingering sense of lifelessness in irregular heartbeat -- a constant reminder, harrowing). how shameful it is then, for vincent, to not know the proper words of response. for a moment, he is caught in quiet contemplation. silence sits amongst them like a friend as the campfire blazes endlessly, deep into the cool night.

what can he say? cloud must know himself better than anyone else. it isn’t for vincent to tell him what to do, or how to feel. all he can do is offer some half-hearted bits of wisdom, a bit of half-truths that he still does not fully understand himself.

“ hm ... just because you’re bad at expressing yourself does mean that you ... don’t think of anything. emotions are a tricky game. ” a game that he knows too well. he glances at cloud’s profile, shaped softly by the gentle, orange-tinged flames. “ I know -- you’ve been through much. ”
