Galley Review: Coffee Gives Me Superpowers by Ryoko Iwata- to be published April 7th 2015
Let me start off with saying that I LOVE coffee. I have an unhealthy obsession with coffee and how amazing this beverage is in my day-to-day life. I thrive on the intense energy that the beverage lends in its ability to keep me going even when I can barely drag myself to class. The title alone contained a great amount of pull towards wanting to pre-read and review this book. At its completion though, I felt as though I had mainlined so much caffeine that I could not even form a coherent thought. Now, don’t take my previous statement as one that I did not enjoy reading the book, I did, but for different reasons than my typical modus operandi of reading to relax and escape from the stressors that take hold in everyday life. This book however was an insane narration of coffee-induced ramblings (I can only assume) that left my head spinning in so many directions. Coffee Gives Me Superpowers is an apt title as it is generally how I feel when drinking this beloved substance that acts as my lifeblood, but despite the many interesting facts and humorous narration that it delivers throughout, I can say that the mental whiplash upon its completion was not necessarily worth the short read. For its hilarity and concise reading experience, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book, however if you are looking for a literary experience with more substance a more streamlined narration, look elsewhere.
