what’s it like, being a ghost? does your head ever become detached at annoyingly inconvenient times?

Dear Charlotte,

As with many things in life (or death in my case?) being a ghost has its ups and downs. Floating is wonderful, going where you couldn't previously is fun, not worrying about dying is amazing! But I do miss the food, and a warm embrace, and my friends. And, weirdly enough, sleep! I am sure that many of us secretly wish they could've just— Well, let's not dwell on what could've, should've, would've.

Concerning my headlessness: it came to me as a surprise the first time my head fell off. I could see my own body as it was trying to catch itself! I am not sure how it works. Why didn't my head simply vanish through the earth? Why does it follow the rules of gravity even though the ghosts literally do not conform to such rules? Is it all some sort of physical memory that we keep after passing away?

Needless to say, it was really hard to navigate my body to pick up the head the first time. Aaand maybe a couple dozen more times after that until I got the hang of it. I traveled a lot for a time, and it is even more terrifying when you are traversing long distances high up in the skies. I had this irrational fear that my head would fall off somewhere so dark and dull that my eyes would not be able to figure out where the head landed…

*Richard shudders involuntarily as he dictates this passage to his current scribe, bribed into writing letters for today with the promise of showing them the way into the kitchens.*

I found ways to combat that, fret not! But yes, having a detachable head is rather inconvenient at times.
