Idol concept: haneul is completely ok with the ice prince sort of concept that his company is trying to sell with him; after all, he’s good with the whole ‘resting bitch face’ due to his shy nature combined with his difficulties with expressing him feelings to others, that only changing when he starts to perform almost like a switch has clicked. however, haneul actually is a little more awkward than simply the ‘cold’ guy from the animations his fans seem to love so much; much more closed off when he isn’t in front of a camera and doesn’t have to go out of his way to be friendly to others. haneul is much more of a ‘in his corner’ type of guy, the one that doesn’t go so well with groups because he has two left feet when it’s about how to deal with other human beings— that combined with his disinterest for confrontation in the first place just makes him avoid them as much as it’s possible. ( he also wishes that his fans would stop asking for his aegyo because he just sucks at it ).
Birth date and age: september 1st ‘93 ( 23 )

Strengths: + singing: one of the few things that haneul is good at; not only because of his unique tone but the control of his voice, especially his falsettos. he’s someone who puts his heart in every single note that he sings and is able to touch people with his singing. + acting: haneul himself doesn’t know how someone so bad at expressing his own emotions can be so good at it with the simple magic of putting on a character of someone else. acting was never something that he considered; nonetheless it was a pleasant surprise that he could empathize so much with his characters, understand their personalities and then play them out in the scenes that he’s cut to do.
Weaknesses: + variety skills: he isn’t witty or funny or has good reactions; haneul is a disaster when it’s about variety shows. the few times that he tries to give some sort of witty or funny retort it always comes off or as awkward or as if he’s being snarky. he’s too expressionless to give any good reactions, so he simply is always trying to blend in with the background in those situations. + teamwork: haneul isn’t the type to really mingle with people, he prefers to do his own things alone and has the tendency of pushing people away with his habits of not talking a lot or his lack of expression. he knows he’s a person that is hard to deal with and that only makes him go more into his shell instead of trying to get out of it since he feels like he’s only inconveniencing people and wants to be out of their ways as much as possible which only puts things in this vicious cycle. he got a little better about it due to interacting with his members but he’s far from being the most people person yet.
Positive traits: hard-working, focused, independent
Negative traits: aloof, awkward, gullible
PERSONAL HISTORY
haneul is six when he’s put out of school to an hospital chair, his small feet don’t touch the ground and simply swing awkwardly while he watches his mom pacing back and forth in the cold waiting room. she can’t stop mumbling things that haneul can’t hear but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand. he knows his dad was in some accident and now the doctors are trying his best to patch him up while his mom is trying her best to not fall apart in front of her son. he reaches out to her, tiny hands grabbing the hem of her skirt and tugs just enough so she’d look at him, before he can say a word the nurse comes in and she doesn’t seem to have good news.
he’s six when he stands besides his mom in a too hot suit and a tie that chokes. he’s six when he has to watch people come and go, some he doesn’t even remember, with pity in their eyes and with ‘i’m sorry for your loss’. his mom smiles to them, it’s small and doesn’t reach her eyes and thanks them even though those words don’t mean anything in the end, they don’t make the pain go away.
haneul is six when he promises to himself ( to dad ) that he’ll take care of mom, no matter what.
life gets harder without the income of his dad to help in the end of the month so his mom ends up taking two jobs to make sure they always have food on their table and that the rent will be payed by the end of the month. always with his promise in mind and seeing how his mom is always tired but never gives up, haneul’s priority turns to trying everything to make his mom’s life easier. he studies his ass off to have good grades at school, takes a few tasks here and there to get some tips to help at home and in the end haneul doesn’t grow up with a lot of friends, especially when he isn’t an easygoing person, has never learned how to express himself properly especially when his mom always seemed to understand him even when he doesn’t say anything.
watching tv together is a luxury reserved pretty much only for some weekends. his mom’s eyes shine brightest than the shiniest star when some boy group shows up, rambling about the ones of her time and how haneul is so handsome and he sings so well that he could be one someday and he’d take her all around the world ( and of course to meet the other handsome boy groups’ members and that makes haneul stare at her with a small grimace on his face because really mom? ), he asks her if that would make her happy. she says yes but what would make her happier is haneul following his own dream and what makes him the happiest.
so the topic is dropped.
that is— until haneul turns sixteen and a strange guy comes up to him when he’s coming back home with a business card and a simple proposal. his mom seems excited even though she tries to hide it with ‘it’s your life, sweetheart, i’ll support you no matter what’; that’s why he gets into the choir club in high school and practices his singing and it isn’t a surprise to anyone that he’s also good at the technical part, but what surprises everyone is howemotional he becomes when he sings, like all the emotions he usually lacks are blossomed when he sings. once he thinks about how his life would be easier if it were a musical until hereally thought this over and got embarrassed about how cringy it’d have been. so he calls that strange guy and asks if his proposal is still up. an audition is scheduled and haneul passes. his mom is so happy they go out for dinner to commemorate.
being a trainee is hard, possibly harder than it should’ve been, but haneul likes it because when he’s practicing until he loses his voice no one comes to bother him, he doesn’t need to fake smiles or try to think about small talk that will probably end up with a bad ending anyway, when he dances until his muscles are too tired to move and aching for some rest he can ignore people and have a very plausible excuse for it. his mom worries, especially after hearing the ‘history’ of the company he has chosen, but he tries his best to show her that this is fine, this is what he has chosen and he isn’t the type to chew on more than he can swallow.
there’s this one evaluation that one of the trainers asks all the trainees if they wish and expect to be put in a group or debut as a solo. haneul replies ‘solo’ without thinking twice. it’s easier to breath when you know that if you screw up, you’re only screwing yourself up, it feels lighter when haneul won’t have to bother others with his own inability when it’s about social interactions. some trainers raise an eyebrow at him, probably wondering if he was being arrogant or simply ambitious while others agreed that he might be able to pull it off. he can feel the judging stares of the other trainees on his back, some even angry about theprepotency that haneul possibly had for such an answer; the trainers move on before haneul can even gather the courage to explain his answer.
unfortunately, haneul ends up debuting in a group and he’s put into some acting classes as some sort of experiment and also to see if they could do something about his way of expressing himself after one of the trainers find out that haneul was simply an awkward kid with expressing himself issues. haneul turns out to be an excellent actor but that doesn’t change much his usual self, especially when acting actually drains too much energy from him and he ends up metaphorically curling on himself even more because by the end of it, people just are even more tiring to deal with so he simply closes himself even more.
‘well’, one manager says and haneul doesn’t even bother humming in acknowledgement ‘at least we found out another way you can be profitable’. and well, haneul thinks, at least he’ll have more money to send to his mom.
