Ryuuji who sees his past in Haru and is set free by him.
When you have an extremely healthy relationship with your coach
Ryūji can't stop watching Haruka and Makoto. He can't stop thinking about the old days when Kiyohumi was still alive, when he was with him.
Makoto supports Haruka with everything. He is always attentive with the black-haired, and his smile is softer when is directed at him. Haruka is really thickheaded and it's hard to convince him about anything, but he is always open to Makoto, the only one who seems to be capable to reach him without causing a fight. Makoto still swims with Haruka even though he decided it to be more a hobby than his work, Ryūji knows because, when everyone leaves after training, they stay a little longer just to float on the water in silence and he has seen them a couple of times, just being there, next to each other. Makoto lets Haruka be as he wants, but always intervenes when he feels Haruka is close to irreparably damaging himself.
Ryūji can see it, how Makoto is Haruka's safe place. How when he is feeling down, Makoto is the first to notice and the one who he reaches, even if they don't talk and he just stays besides the other, thinking, calming down, recharging.
So, Ryūji doesn't complain or say something when Haruka insists, again, that he wants Makoto to be part of his training staff, or when he is having trouble with stress and Makoto comforts him, when Makoto asks Ryūji to give Haruka a couple of days off, etc.
"Drop the chan, Makoto."
Haruka always says, but Ryūji knows he is fond to the nickname. He knows that just one day without Makoto calling him by it and Haruka would be upset as if the pool was empty.
One day, Haruka receives a call from the hospital; Makoto is there because of lack of sleep and a light anemia. Ryūji still has problems understanding Haruka completely, be it his words or his expressions, but, that day, he can see the anguish, the fear, the anxiety, everything, in his blue eyes, and there's no need for Haruka to speak.
"Let's go," Ryūji says, walking towards the exit. "Where is he? I'll take you there. It'll be faster than going by train."
When they arrive, Haruka walks really fast towards the room where Makoto is, almost leaving Ryūji alone, and he has to tell him to calm down a little since they are at the hospital, but Haruka doesn't obey. Makoto is fine; he is on a bed, awake and with an intravenous in his arm.
Haruka sits next to him on the bed and holds his hand, while Makoto smiles at him, saying he is alright and that Haruka doesn't need to worry so much.
Ryūji is at the door, looking at them as always. Maybe someone would say he is too soft. Makoto is okay, he seems just fine, so Haruka should have done the training as always, there was no need for him to do otherwise, but Ryūji doesn't want Haruka to suffer as he did.
He lost the race that time because he was more worried about Kiyohumi to think and focus on something else. Kiyohumi was... Really important to him. The blonde was always besides him when he needed it, always, and Ryūji can't stop blaming himself for not being there for him too when he needed him the most. Kiyohumi was a warm presence in his life, but as it says, he was.
Ryūji regrets it, he really does. He knows he couldn't do anything for Kiyohumi, but he at least could have been there, just accompanying him, making him feel safe and loved as he did for Ryūji.
Maybe Kiyohumi would have smiled at him the same way Makoto is smiling at Haruka even though he's scolding him for not taking good care of himself. Maybe Kiyohumi would have know how much Ryūji loved him.
I'm sure that Ryūji sees himself in Haruka and I like to think he now appreciates Haruka as a son(? Or something like that, so now he wants to see him happy, more than just to prevent a talent and a person from being consumed as it happened to him. And I also think that Ryūji sees Makoto and Haruka as what he and Kiyohumi couldn't be.
It is left to the interpretation of each one if Ryūji wanted him fraternally or if it was romantically.
I don't know if Kiyohumi is the correct name xd I remember seeing his name being Kiyofumi, but I searched and I found that is Kiyohumi, so yes.
If you care about something, take it and don’t let it go!
