This movie doesn’t feel intelligent or as sad/crazy as Donnie Darko did. I find sequels to be more successful if it can be a good stand alone movie, but this was so reliant on Donnie Darko.
Spoiler: [About Samantha Darko 7 years after Donnie’s death. She runs away from home and falls deeper into her sleeps as she sleepwalks. She travels towards California in a car with her friend, Corey. Their car ends up breaking down in Utah and they are brought to the next town by Randy. Their car is towed and they need to have their water pump replaced. The mechanic can do it for lots of money that they don’t have. Randy agrees to find the part in the junkyard and replace it himself. In the meantime, they check into a motel. Corey wants to just have fun, but Samantha kills her vibe with her sadness. Samantha notices a missing sign for Billy Moorcroft. Justin, also known as Iraq Jack, climbs a windmill at this time. Samantha sleepwalks that night and takes a feather out of the TV. She heads to Justin on the windmill and they talk about the end of the world. They then jump through a portal. In the morning, Samantha wakes up on a bench and meets Officer O’dell, who mentions Iraq Jack being a pervert. He says she shouldn’t be dressed like that. She goes back to the motel and sees firefighters tending to a meteorite crashed onto the windmill. She watches with Corey. Samantha asks Randy about the water pump and he says he’ll try later. Samantha and Corey eat at the diner and see their waitress talk to Trudy, a religious girl. They notice Iraq Jack rummage through the garbage and the waitress mentions how he doesn’t deserve pity. Jeremy talks to them saying he saw them at the meteorite crash and how he bought it for $600 to study it. Corey disses him and leaves when the waitress heads to the kitchen. Samantha pays the bill and reassures Jeremy. They meet Pastor John, who talks to them about sin and God. Corey disses him. John gives a religious book to Samantha. Iraq Jack goes to the junkyard and talks with Ricky about what he’s done. Ricky talks about him wearing different things so that people wouldn’t dislike him so much. Ricky mentions the princess and ducks from an imaginary explosion. He leaves. A party happens that night and Jeremy comes to see Samantha. Ricky takes her away to check on Corey. Corey wants to party and pushes her into the pool. Samantha sees Ricky’s home pictures and learns of his missing brother. She talks about her life, but doesn’t mention Donnie. She goes outside and sees the feather and ends up with Justin. He follows the form in front of him and heads to the church. He burns it down. In the morning, the motel owner talks to her about payment and continues to talk with her as she closes the door. The fires are checked out and they have Justin’s tags there. Trudy is crying and Samantha asks what’s wrong. Trudy mentions knowing that the fire at the church was an arson and talks about God. She drops her bracelet with a key attached. Samantha picks it up and learns that it’s from John. Samantha bumps into Jeremy and he mentions that John had been to jail and that she could not pay the motel owner if she talks to him about UFO’s. She says she’ll pay nonetheless. He tends to a wound on his arm as she leaves. Justin creates a bunny helmet. Corey is in the car with Randy and some other friends and they stop to talk to Samantha walking. She mentions the water pump and is brushed off again. She fights with Corey and Corey disses her about killing herself. Samantha walks away. Randy kicks her out of the car and leaves. A car out of nowhere crashes into Randy’s car with Samantha involved. She dies while Randy is wounded. Corey signs a statement saying Randy wasn’t drunk. She drinks at the motel and looks through Samantha’s things. She goes to sleep and wakes up to see Billy, telling her a way to get Samantha back. In the morning, she talks with Randy about ghosts, Billy, and acid. They look up information about Donnie and Randy wonders why she didn’t mention him. That night, Billy takes Corey to a cave as she follows the form in her. She tries to disconnect from it, but can’t. She goes back to the past of arriving next to Samantha with Randy and the car. She mentions her dad not knowing her so they don’t
actually have a place to head towards. They decide to part ways very nicely. The car goes off and Corey dies instead. At night, Samantha sees Justin and talks about Donnie and getting to higher ground. She wakes up on a roof and walks through town. She sees a dress and Jeremy says his family owns the store. Jeremy talks about the universe and everyone’s role in it. He says the meteorite contained a metal that isn’t even on the periodic table. When she asks about his arm, he says it’s a rash. Randy shows up and asks what he can do for her and she says to bring Corey back and buy her the dress. She goes to the burnt church and John talks with her. She wants to return the book and he takes her to the theaters. He helps her envision her future and start over by staring at the blank screen. She only envisions her dance with Sparkle Motion. He later touches her thighs and gives her a WWJD bracelet. Trudy sees from afar. Samantha leaves and he runs after her. He tells Trudy he didn’t do anything and she mentions that her bracelet is missing. Samantha falls asleep as she reads Roberta’s book. She wakes up in the dress. In the morning, she wakes up at Justin’s campgrounds as he takes the book from her. He says he’s Justin Sparrow. He asks her how to do it and she’s confused. He mentions Donnie and she doesn’t know how he knows. He says that she told her. He puts on the bunny helmet and she runs away towards a cave. She finds a key bracelet and opens a door to find two dead children. It’s Randy’s brother and Billy. The town loves her now and believe Iraq Jack did it. She talks with Randy about the deaths and how Justin didn’t do it. She then talks about Donnie. Justin shows up and is arrested on sight. She says that he didn’t do it and that the bracelet belonged to Trudy. Trudy slaps her and shows her own bracelet. Samantha goes back to her room and sees the dress, brought by Jeremy. He wants her to wear it and go watch fireworks together. She’s reluctant, but he convinces her. They go to a point that she doesn’t want to be in and he sets up a picnic. He starts seeing tesseracts fall to the Earth and finds it unbelievable. She notices his rash getting larger and brings up concern and he starts talking about what he can see. He tries to kiss her and she rejects. He gets angry at her and pushes her to the ground. She bumps her head on the bunny helmet and dies. Justin gets the feather from her and gets out of jail. Randy finds Samantha’s body and Justin nearby. Justin puts on the helmet and goes back in time. He’s back on the windmill. The crash happens and he dies. The crash is checked in the morning and the meteorite is now owned by the motel owner. Samantha chooses to leave town alone now and separates with Corey nicely. The boys are still alive in the cave. Jeremy draws the bunny with his food. Samantha leaves on the bus after being dropped off by Randy.]
