I think in general achievements are a dangerous thing for game design because most of the time they serve as ridiculous timesinks for their own sake because you want coveted achievements few have. So for people inclined to Complete The Video Game it's adding stupid bullshit in. I think in-built motivation factors are a lot more interesting and a healthier expectation for game completion

#of course any game where the achievements are tied to preexisting inbuilt motivation factors would usually be fine #also some games like portal / portal 2 use achievements pretty well I think. but that's because valve was really into this whole achievement #s thing #this paragraph inspired by having played the kingdom hearts games on emulators and thus never having to go for 'platinums'
