If DHS is going to cut Joe Arpaio off from using ICE ACCESS programs, because they're being used 'improperly'- shouldn't they rescind those programs from every municipality?

I mean, it's great that they're cutting Cowboy Joe off... but the thing is- that's HOW 287g and S-Comm work across the country. So, if you're going to cut him off for being a dick that abuses and racially profiles because he has access to a system that encourages racial profiling- aren't you just pulling some smoke and mirrors shit?

Cutting off Cowboy Asshole Joe, while still running a system of Cowboy offices that don't listen to the national office doesn't really impress me. Cut the programs entirely, then I'll be extra jubilant. Until then- goodbye, Arpaio- here's hoping you're not the last to get cut off from the DHS machine ;-)

Regardless of the issues at stake, our nation’s political debate seems to be fueled by bloated jargon and calculated strategy. Among them, the “family unit” has become a political label, a contrived moral badge and, at times, a shield, used by conservatives, liberals and all that fall in between.

So why is this nation still tearing families apart?

As we’ve detailed in an earlier post, Javier Santos entered the Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte, NC, after being stopped for a broken tail light—and consequently arrested—while driving home from work on Sept. 6. That same day, ten undocumented youth were arrested for participating in a sit-in. Members of the NC DREAM Team met Javier in jail. Overnight, the team was released. Javier was transferred to an Atlanta detention center, where he sits awaiting deportation. (Click here to sign the petition to bring him back.)

I plan on watching this on PBS next week! The great journalist Maria Hinojosa will break down S-COMM and immigration under the current policies and administration on Tuesday, October 18th.

Dozens of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) organizations across the country are adding their voices to the growing national movement to end ICE‘s controversial fingerprint-sharing ―Secure Communities (S-Comm) program. By forcing local law enforcement to share fingerprint data for every person arrested – no matter how valid or minor the charge - with federal immigration authorities, S-Comm has contributed to skyrocketing numbers of detentions and deportations.

"We hear regular reports of LGBTQ people who find themselves in deportation proceedings after being profiled by their race, class, sexuality, and gender as they go about their daily lives or even as they navigate domestic violence," said Morgan Bassichis of the San Francisco-based Community United Against Violence (CUAV), the country’s oldest LGBTQ anti-violence organization. "Rather than making anyone more 'secure,' S-Comm endangers all communities by tearing at the fabric of family and support networks and creating a culture of fear."

The Obama administration just did the unthinkable: Forcing states and police departments to comply with a controversial program called Secure Communities or S-Comm. I just signed a petition asking President Obama to end S-Comm. We need a massive outcry—and quickly—if we are to stop this disastrous program.

S-Comm is a highly criticized federal program that is deporting immigrants who have done nothing wrong, encouraging racial profiling, and devastating communities around the country. Since the beginning of President Obama’s administration more than 1 million of immigrants have been deported.

The controversy over the Federal Secure Communities (S-Comm) program continues to grow as States are going beyond wondering whether they can refuse to participate.  While the Governor of Massachusetts questions whether his state can refuse to participate, the Governor of Illinois just announced that his State is pulling out of S-Comm.  D.C. recently opted out, and Washington State has refused to participate. 

I have read articles where Janet Napolitano reportedly said that S-Comm was mandatory by 2013, but there has also been a lot of reporting that Federal authorities had repeatedly said it was optional.  This will need to be clarified from the top, before more states pull out and cause even more uncertainty. 

For background, states are trying to pull out of S-Comm because they say that despite the stated purpose of S-Comm being to deport aliens with serious criminal convictions, vast numbers of people with lesser crimes (or no crimes!) are being deported, leaving fragmented families here in the US. 

In waiting to see which states will pull out next, one thing's for sure: We wont see Arizona on that list!  This proves once again that all politics is local.
