First impression

Again, I forgot. But it was probably something really good considering I decided to write a damn fic about him !! I also may have known that he’d return in S3 when I first watched Shin Teikoku so I would’ve been like *EYE EMOJIS*.

WHAT WAS MY LIFE BEFORE FUDOU AKIO??????????????

Fudou is such a fascinating character!! He’s clearly close with his mother, or is he? It’s hard to tell since she only appears in one scene, and we’re led to assume that it’s his motivating force to become strong (I literally just thought of this just now while writing this). So, there’s the question of whether his motivation is from his mother or from himself. Maybe both. Maybe it changed over Inazuma Eleven once he got a taste of winning on his merits in the FFI.

But unlike so many other Inazuma characters where their parents are tragically dead, I find Fudou really interesting because his family is alive but dysfunctional. That’s why I prefer the dynamic of Fudou’s dad being around. In my opinion, a scenario where Fudou’s dad sticks around and continues to (try to) provide for his family does a lot more to explain Fudou’s character than one where he just ran off. The constant presence of a father figure that’s trying his best, but it’s not enough - and if Fudou’s mum also snipes at him under the stress of their daily life around little Fudou, warping the relationship even more - especially when you consider the pressure on fathers to be the provider of their families (incidentally i headcanon that Fudou’s mum quit her job upon marriage but was forced to return to the part time workforce after the loansharks) - that to me explains more why Fudou grew up so obsessed with strength and power and being the best. Because he has a real-life example of a ‘failure’ coming home every day. Ahem. You’ll have to read Renegade for my full treatment of that headcanon lol.

OK, about his personality. Clearly Fudou is very driven but I think once he gets back on the right path he is no longer as amoral. Maybe he was really shaken by what happened in Shin Teikoku. I kinda didn’t think too much about this actually (apart from in Renegade), but FFI Fudou is still proud and (perhaps rightly compared to some of the players) arrogant, smart and wily and impulsive, but he has a new thread of doing the right thing within him. Though it’s ambiguous for a long long while. He’s also very reserved isn’t he? He talks a lot (relatively) of shit about what’s happening around him but never about himself. Dammit Fudou you just need someone who understands you.

As for GO!him, I kinda try to pretend it doesn’t quite exist. (I like the clothes and hair though.) Although him coaching Resistance Japan was cool. I’d think Fudou would cooperate with Kageyama out of pragmatism if it was really necessary but I don’t remember too much of Galaxy lol. You know that Pixiv comic where Kidou and Fudou just keep calling Kageyama “Ka- no, Kuroiwa-kantoku”? That basically sums up my impression of him in Galaxy LOL.

Favorite moment

Every moment????Maybe that bit in the Fire Dragon match where he finally GOT TO PLAY OMG BLESS HIM.

The bit in the Mr. K match where he kicked Kidou’s hesitation to oblivion was pretty cool too, but honestly my exhilaration at the Joker scene was just way more vivid due to the 20-something eps of jerking around !!!!!!!!!

Idea for a story

I know I did a collab where Fudou did go snowboarding but the original idea was Fudou and Fubuki only go snowboarding and get stuck in a creaky old house in a blizzard. The intention was a banter fic where Fubuki would try to make Fudou tomato ramen and Fudou would be like “get away from the stove you have no idea what you’re doing”. IDK if that will ever happen though.

Also, a situation where Fudou would completely lose his control. Completely. (preferably not re: violence but like, panic or something) I don’t know how it would happen but I want to see it.

Unpopular opinion

Personally I think Fudou would just be like “who’s this motherfucker” @ Tobitaka. I know a lot of people used to talk about them being friends because they both owe a lot to Hibiki but honestly, they don’t click. ESPECIALLY when Tobitaka is favoured by Kudou initially for no apparent reason when he sucks ass!!! He’s so bad!!!! All he has is his stupid leg which kicks out typhoons for some reason but not even controlled, like what if it takes out an ally instead? Meanwhile Fudou has spent his whole life working towards sporting excellence, frankly it’s an insult!! The most I can ever see them sharing, in the time frame of the original series, at least, is a moment of shared worry over Hibiki when he’s hospitalised in the middle/end of season 3. Well, I like to think that Fudou eventually grows to like Tobitaka’s ramen though.

Favorite relationship

Fudou and Kidou but not in a relationship sense. I’m also fake because I have never written any but I like seeing explorations of their relationship and the parallels and differences between them. Otherwise once again open to most things lmao.

Favorite headcanon

Fudou spent time in Italy right? His English and maybe Italian is probably really good. Apart from that, my favourite headcanon is the headcanon about his family I gushed about above. OH and the headcanon (read Renegade) that he didn’t accept Hibiki’s offer initially and Hibiki’s retelling of it in the Fire Dragon match where he spilled Fudou’s whole backstory without his consent was just glossed over in an attempt to hide the embarrassing bits.
