I had a dream last night that you made a comic where HMS were sitting on a couch watching tv but then Heart and Mind started arguing and Soul became increasingly concerned about something ??? and kept trying to point it out before Mind started debating on whether or not Soul was smart
I really like their designs and I was curious as to what they were inspired by (if they even had inspirations at all) I mainly ask this because Souls outfit reminds me A LOT of Homura Akemis but that might just be me shrugs😭
hullo, thank you for the ask!
somewhat obviously, madoka magica was my biggest inspiration. its the magical girl show i know the best, and is thus the most influential on my conceptualisation of magical girls on the whole. its a great story!
while not fully intentional, homuras outfit was definitely a big inspiration for soul, as well as (to a lesser degree) the outfits in sailor moon. in my head soul is kinda the Main Guy of the three, with the most responsibility (despite what mind or heart may insist). he gets the final say.
while you havent Exactly asked this, ive decided to take the opportunity to explain some of my thoughts behind the designs of the three. im actually planning on redesigning their magical girl outfits, as im not super happy with them (particularly heart and minds.... im very happy with souls), so im seeing this as a sort of last hurrah for these designs before i redo them. im very glad you like their designs though, thank you!
thoughts under the cut.
heres the original designs, for quick reference and for anyone who hasnt seen them
lets start with common design features:
my intention was for the three of them to be a matching and (somewhat) cohesive set. they all use grey and white, all have bows with their respective symbols on them, and have matching, colour mirrored boots. they additionally each have at least one secondary colour that is unique to them; light purple for heart, dark red for soul, and mind, the lucky guy, gets both dark and light blue. (this inconsistency with mind is one thats been bothering me for a bit.) as well as all that, they have their more saturated primary colours for their boots, hems of their upper layers, and their weapons.
now for individual design features. lets start with soul, because im happiest with his design:
soul's ribbon is the tightest around his neck, like a noose. he has a red brain-like shape on the knot of the bow, and, for obvious reasons, his trident on the bow...parts... of the bow. one may link mind with the brain, to which i say, yes! however, consider... consider soul for me. i have much to say on soul and the brain but i wont get into it without prompting. just think about it for me.
the alternating half-half of grey and cream is both to mirror the split of heart and mind (and his place in between), and to mirror the shadow we see on him in light and night. his boots are long both for the aura of it and because lace-up boots of that length are very inconvenient to take on and off. something something, struggling to be comfortable in ones position, feeling trapped...... yeah. the stitches on his shoulders also link to masks in a convoluted way. think puppets on strings and marionettes with painted faces. soul also has the tallest heels. small detail but i just wanted to note that.
for heart:
the hood is an obvious link to his hoodie. the skirt is a less obvious link to his trousers with the interesting texture on the upper legs. all those lines? yeah. pretty cool. his cloak(?) thing(?) is long and drapey because i liked the contrast of that with his weapon. a hammer is very physical and direct, and lots of fabric gets in the way of that. theres something to being inconvenienced by ones own situation in such a tangible way. heart is an interestingly floaty character in my opinion, a bit dreamy in his mentality at times... so yeah. draping fabric that swirls around him as he fights. also, the gloves to protect his fist and mirror the fingerless gloves he wears.
for mind:
i couldnt get over the idea of him in a vest for some reason. i dont have much explanation for it other than yeah he needed to wear it, idk why. im the least happy with his design and dont have much to say about it. the corset i like. corsets can help provide back support and compression to the body, which ups blood pressure. theyre a very structured garment... i think mind would gel with that. he also has archery gloves for the bow. he has the most arm exposed both to link to his outfit in storm and a spring as well as to be a show of physical strength. like.... 'look how strong and cool and better than you i am'. an ego thing, in his particular case. he has a store-bought quiver for his arrows (also storebought), because i find it important that each of them have a downside to their weapons, and i hate to make things too convenient for them.
so yeah, thats it! i dont plan to change their weapons in the redesign, just their outfits. i want heart and minds to be more intentional and thought out than they currently are, and i want them to be more cohesive. i dont expect souls to change much lol. thank you again for the ask, i mostly rambled about something completely tangential but i hope it was interesting! to anyone reading this, have a lovely day B:•]
May I perchance ask what you used to make the mv? Just out of curiosity I like to know what tools people use…
everything from the thumbs and character designs to the final animations was drawn in the procreate app B:•] pretty much everything i draw these days, aside from traditional work, is drawn in procreate. i find it works best for my personal creative process
