Re-writing Season 15 Episode 7 (Last Call)
I feel like it would have been a lot more poinant if Leo wasn’t a bad guy, but a hunter who’d been out of the hunt for 15 or so years who’d enjoyed it for a bit but got really bored and jaded with normal life. Dean pops up in his bar, and it sparks something that Leo’s not felt for 15 years. And he’s just amazed that Dean and Sam are still on it, are still fighting, still trying to make a difference. He joins the hunt, for the thrill, for old times sake, for Dean, for a good look at Dean’s ass. Leo’s a bit slow with the lore, and some other hunter tricks, which slows down the hunt, and shows Dean how much of his work over the past 15 years has paid off. They dispatch the monster, and save the victim. Maybe there’s a moment where Leo has to chose between his own life and the victim’s, and he choses himself. Maybe it’s Dean and Leo working together that leads to a case well done. Maybe Leo realises that he doesn’t want to go back to hunting, but his appreciation, and the fact that that Dean hunting means Leo can live a less dangerous life, is what motivates Dean. Maybe Dean inspires Leo and he wants to join the fight, and that’s what spurs Dean on. Either way, Dean realises how important the fight is and is ready to jump back in. I just think the episode was a bit flat, and showing a negative road Dean coulda taken, doesn’t cover the positive ways him stopping hunting coulda ended. A more positive/collaborative form of motivation would have been more interesting and nuanced.
