Mystery Stories
I’m actually really excited. I wasn’t really happy with my chosen topic--I would have rather written on something else (I’m not sure what), but, you know, time and availability--but then I remembered that there was a way to make a point about potential hypermasculinity being tempered by the presentation of a fair-play mystery story (even if it isn’t a very good one), and I got excited. I love mysteries more than almost any form of entertainment. They work so well with almost everything! It’s not always easy to get them to work well, but they do. Just ask J. K. Rowling, or the writers of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
It felt kind of weird having my final paper of my undergraduate career be on something that I didn’t feel I really “connected” with, but after folding in that mystery component, I’m quite satisfied, and I might even expand it between the first draft and the final draft. I think the only way I could have been happier would be if I had been able to just straight-up write about mystery stories.
