Trolley Problem Meme

This meme is a visual representation of an old ethical conundrum. The origin is based on the ethical dilemma of whether or not it ethical to kill multiple people to save one. In the original dilemma you are a person walking along side a train track and you see a train is en route to run over 5 people on a track. You have the option of diverting the track but in doing so it'll run over one person. Would you do it? What if it was a loved one? Thats one version. Another version of that dilemma involves you being over a bridge and seeing a train is going to run over a person you can stop it but you physically have to push a large man, thus killing him, to save the people on the track. 

The visual of this meme is just a simplified stick figure illustrating the dilemma but for whatever reason this riddle has but exaggerate to the point of absurdity. So now in these new reintegration we see impossible case-scenarios, or just abstract reinterpreting of the meme. In some reiterations we see the meme combined with other memes (like the savage confused spongebob memes). Because of the often nihilistic/absurdist nature of the meme, the tone is often ridiculous/absurdist. This follows the tradition of absurdist memes that make fun of something potentially serious (like Harambe, whom is parodied in a variation of the meme).

As many outsiders already know, the sport of hockey is not a “soft” game. So when picking meme’s, I felt a need to incorporate the tough grinding mentality along with the pleasure/lighter side to the sport. First of all, it doesn't matter whether you are a 19 year old rookie or a superstar centerman. Everyone will get hurt and hurt and hurt again. The sport of hockey, unlike other sports, has grown with an image of it’s players continuing to contribute on the ice even under severe circumstances. However, the game is not always played in a serious tone. Tag teaming with the competitive edges, spontaneous trash talking and clever improv has also played a large role in shaping the game. This combination has made spectators relate to the players on a personal level and made my job that much easier with the amount of memes out there. Most revolve around the general stereotype as mentioned before. Toughness, Passion, and Personality.

Valentines Card Meme

The main visual components of the Valentine’s Day Card Meme always include a to and from and usually include a line of text with an image that relates to an aspect of popular culture. The meaning of the meme is to provoke a humorous response from poking fun at traditional Valentine’s Day romanticism by replacing it with more overtly sexual content. The meme has gained success from it’s ability to illuminate the more realistic motives behind Valentine’s Day and connect them back to mainstream society. For example, the version of the meme depicting an image of Harry Potter character Neville Longbottom that states “I long for your bottom” is a play on words of the character’s last name, while also making a sexual reference that would not usually be perceived as romantic. The other versions of the meme follow the same structure. The DJ Khaled version of the meme uses Khaled’s famous coined phrase to allude to a form of joking admiration. The version depicting the coach is a character from the movie Mean Girls who uses the phrase “you will get pregnant and die” in the film that could also be applied to the fact that it is common to have sex with your significant other on Valentine’s Day, therefore increasing the chances of getting pregnant. The version showing an image of famous children’s program scientist Bill Nye uses the word “ion” instead of “eye on” hinting at the fact that Nye is a scientist since an ion is a particle often used in scientific studies. Lastly, the version of the meme with a picture of Norman Bates from the popular series Bates Motel references an overarching pollen of the series in which Norman gradually becomes sexually attracted to his own mother. The tone of this meme is humorous since each adaption of the meme could be described as a “bad” Valentine’s card in literal terms. Overall, the meme represents a satirical outlook of a common worldwide norm.
