𝐆𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐌𝐀 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐀 𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐍. the responsiblity of billons, the legacy that hangs in her shadow just for who her father is. it's something her nor her brother can ever escape from & the thing in which people will compare her as a ruler. except now, hardly two years into her reign upon the death of her aunt, ghanima is finding herself . . isolated, burdened more than she ever expected. while she looks young physically, but her mind is older than her physical years. though in this early morning as the sun begins to peak over the horoizon, the desert set ablaze like an unruly fire to which she faces with her back to her chambers, ghanima is plauged by thoughts, memories, of her mother. the ache that's dulled in her chest fans itself new & she feels the heaviness like a rock in her stomach. yet, a warmth seems to rush over her rising goosebumps along her skin. without even needing to see who had come, she knew: ❛ mother, ❜ spoken with a mixture of relief & sorrow. ❛ i shouldn't be surprised that you've come when my head has been full of you all morning. ❜

𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐒𝐇𝐄'𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐓. on her own, with her brother, or with her mother. ghanima had always felt more comfortable among the sands, under blazing heat, witnessing the way the wind blow the spice from the tops of sand dunes. it never ceased to amaze her, to intrigue her, as everything did about the fremen--her mothers people & her own. the palace was safer, yes, but constricting feeling. scheduled with eyes watching her, watching leto, for safety. hands are careful as they grasp an outcrop of redish colored rock, body pulling her upward as her mothers outstretched hand is taken. standing at the top now, ghanima looks out toward their planet with a small smile. ❛ your memories will never do our planet justice, mother. ❜ says ghani, turning her head so blue with blue can look at chani. ❛ every time we come out here. . .i'm amazed. ❜

( alicent admired it in her truth be told. her defiance, her assurance of self. nothing of chani was molded to others wants or whims--she was herself & she did not apologize for it. alicent, on the other hand, had been meticulously molded since youth. ) ❛ how are you liking it here in arrakeen, chani ? much different than the desert, i'm sure. ❜

there was but one response to her words, but in its place was a furrow of his eyebrows & a downward pull of his lips while his head threatened to shake. her words left him with none. he was silent, thoughts swirling like sand on a windy day, as he tried to make sense & grasp an understanding of his own.

as he stood looking out toward the endless horizon of sand & dunes (maybe waiting for worm sightings or hoping for a cloud that would never come), he realised how little he really knew about fremen culture & how easily it was to notice differences between tribes once respected members from them spoke with him about their ways of doing things. chani was no different. her teachings, her words of guidance, were not like what stilgar had to offer paul. yet, those differences made him wish he could know more.

he turned his gaze back to her, becoming lost in her blue eyes.

“ is it tradition, culture or some sort of mixture of the two? ” paul asked. the question had been on the tip of his tongue, daring to come out, but always caught between the polite approach of a duke’s son & the direct approach of a duke. “ i would like nothing more than to learn more about your people, chani. to understand them ... would you honour me with that wish? ”

there was still much yet to be done concerning the great houses & gaining their respect & trust in him. paul knew it would not come easily nor would it come swiftly, but he knew that it would come for he had seen it. he had seen their understanding, but at the cost of a war spread across the galaxy. a war in his family name. where had the time gone when he tried to prevent such a thing from happening? now, as he stood in the familiar sands of the desert, everything had changed. he no longer pushed against fate, & instead, he opened his arms to accept fate as it was.

but in gaining his power, he felt he had lost something, or someone. seeking out chani in the desert had been a task he wished to do on his own. it must have been a miscommunication between them. she had no other reason ( in his mind ) to venture away from him & return to the north, but when he had been informed she was there, he wasted no time. a worm was fast, but not as fast as the beating of his heart as he approached her. after hours spent travelling to find her, he found himself suddenly unable to proceed any further toward her.

a hand reached out but quickly retracted to his side as he felt his posture stiffen from her words. what wrong had he done to cause such a response from her?

( yet, she has not forgotten her mission ... the core of her sisterhood even with this version of their kwisatz haderach has finally come to light. though, presenting as a man rather than a woman as his mother, jessica, had been instructed. ) 'no matter,' the thought is sighed in her mind as the door to paul's office is finally closed behind her by one of his detail, 'he can be made malleable over time. it has been done before & perhaps it can be again. control, the sisterhood needs even an ounce- ..'

train of thought is broken when brown eyes settle on chain coming toward her down the hallway, hands folding at her front as alicent meets the fremen woman in the middle. black outfit hangs over her shoulders, a hood not pulled over her head nor worn is the often elaborate headdresses of most sisters. ❛ good afternoon, chani. ❜ alicent smiles--unlike some other in her order, the redheaded woman has never been mean to chani. ❛ how are you fairing today ? it is rather warm on arrakis today. ❜

learning the ways of the fremen was no easy task. paul often felt like a fish out of water, in more ways than one, & no matter how much he thought he was learning, there was always going to be something else that he was unaware of. it was to be expected, or so he reminded himself. the filmbooks he used for reference were incomplete & flawed at best, but they had given him the groundwork he needed to get to the point of knowing something – they had managed to save the lives of his mother & himself when they needed to outrun a sandworm.

but now, what use were they? breathing heavily into his mask, he reached an arm out to a nearby rock, keeping his body mostly upright as his eyes closed. nothing prepared him for how difficult it was to run, without falling, in the sand. to make matters worse, he had fallen multiple times before finding a spot to breathe.

paul didn’t move, his eyes opened & he could feel the cool steel of the blade against his exposed skin. his heart began to race while in his mind, he recited the litany against fear to help control his breathing into something easier to swallow.

he swallowed, causing his jaw to tense, but out of the corner of his eye, he saw her. paul could feel his lips twitch into a modest grin, thankfully it remained concealed behind his mask. “ are you serious right now? ” he forced himself to laugh. “ is this part of the training that i wasn’t made aware of? ”
