Seeing a lot of “there was no reason for Isha to be in the story” complaints and aside from the fact that story wise I actually love having new and varied characters interacting in interesting and unexpected ways that’s kind of a large part of what I come to stories for, and aside from the whole narrative weight of a character who’s being called Jinx trying a “do over” of her major incident and having it go so catastrophically wrong, I think there’s definitely something to be said for an arc exploring the whole “is it better to have loved and lost than to never love at all?”where sometimes getting the thing you ever wanted and losing it can fuck you over way more. Like, they take Jinx, who adopts this kid and through her reconnects with her childhood self who she’s been struggling to either cast aside or integrate, and also her older sister who she now has a bit of better understanding of having walked a mile in her shoes, and the father who raised her, and for a moment it actually looks like it’ll work this time. And then she loses it all, this wasn’t the same scenario as the end of s1, this was specifically and textually intended as a conscious and deliberate do over, an extension of “it was something I could fix”, and she’s gonna feel like she jinxed it. Jinx was apathetic to her own death at the beginning of s2 but it feels like it’s gonna be way worse now. But Isha did it all so the girl who saved her could live. Jinx is going to have to reckon with the fact that you will love and lose in life, and it’ll be painful, but painful as it is it’s better than never having it at all, and it’s part of that thing that Isha wanted for her, living. And I think that’s a very interesting and crucial question to be asking, especially of a character called Jinx

I love the way they do the layers with Jinx that we see in episode 4 that she’s pretty baffled by the hero worship, saying to Silco, “Me, a hero? How screwed up is this place”. Moreover, she’s actually actively avoiding anything to do with the mantle, even stating that “Jinx is dead”, to the point that Isha is taking it up in her stead. The scene when she springs the Zaunites from Stillwater looking for Isha is really beautiful for this, from the way she plays up to it, declaring herself as the big fat hero with all the flair, but then grinning nervously, and being genuinely stunned and moved as they all reach out to touch her reverently. The way they take the time to establish how complex and strange this feeling is to her makes it especially notable and wonderfully delicious when she leans fully into it for Vi. “Wake up sis. I’m a hero.” Here she’s actually flaunting it for Vi, in a way that belies and conceals just how complicated it actually makes her feel, because she knows that at this stage Vi doubts that Jinx is capable of much of anything positive, and deep down, she still desires Vi’s approval. She’s overcompensating, bigging up her legend, using how she knows others view her as both a shield and a spearhead. There’s just something about her wanting Vi to acknowledge her for this thing that privately she’s not even certain how she feels about herself

Jinx might consider herself a bad luck omen but Isha probably considers it the luckiest fall of her life that landed her on top of the undercity’s most unwanted wanted. she’s got a family now

I don’t know if I’m alone in this but Jinx telling Caitlyn “I didn’t know your mom was there. It probably wouldn’t have made a difference, but. I didn’t know” does not read as an apology to me. or I suppose more accurately, apology does not feel like quite the right word for it. it’s many things, there’s a whole lot of complexity and nuance and context and subtext to it, but it’s not an apology. it is an unexpected moment of genuine connection between Jinx and Caitlyn. it’s Jinx recognising an echo, acknowledging the pain of losing a parent, the pain that she knows well, that she taught to Caitlyn. it’s Jinx contemplating the cyclical nature of violence. it’s Jinx wanting the record straight, that her mothers killing wasn’t personal, wasn’t part of the dance of paranoia and pain she and Cait and Vi were treading. it’s also incredibly blunt, even though Jinx’s state of desolation softens it. she acknowledges to Caitlyn that it wouldn’t have made a difference; she would always have fired that missile, for Silco, for his mission, his vengeance. Jinx has no love for the upper city. she has no love for the ruling body of Piltover. but she didn’t kill Cassandra Kiramman bc she was Caitlyn’s mother. she didn’t even know. I don’t think this necessarily means she feels guilty about killing Councillors; there’s little evidence of that. but she does feel something about Caitlyn having lost her mother. and I think Jinx is holding those two, somewhat opposed, things at once. I think it’s interesting that Jinx desires to get this across to Caitlyn at all. there’s a lot going on in this line, but it’s not really an apology. it’s more like recognition. it’s more like honesty. it’s more like sympathy. it’s all and none of these things. all the descriptors and boxes I can come up with feel too small to hold it, and honestly, I love that in a scene
