UNHhhh Ep. 44 — High School Pt. 2
Beauregard, some fools, and a blood pact
M watches Gargoyles s2e44-45, The Gathering
Y’all been waiting for this shit haven’t you
Short version:
In which I am Demona and this fucking show just kicked me right in the chest, where my feels are.
The long version WOO BOY SPOILERS AHOY
HEY REMEMBER HOW THIS SNARKY CHAOTIC ASSHOLE IS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER
REMEMBER HOW I HAD CONCERNS THAT I WOULD NOT ACTUALLY WANT TO PUNCH OBERON IN THE FACE
THOSE CONCERNS WERE UNFOUNDED
SO VERY UNFOUNDED
AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT I HAVE SOME OPINIONS
AND SOME FEELINGS
A FEW THOUGHTS
ABOUT THESE EPISODES
JUST A FEW
A HANDFUL
Okay! Mini meltdown over! I am now probably not going to devolve into an all-caps screaming rant. (That’s a lie; I am absolutely going to because it’s been almost 72 hours since I watched these episodes and I am still screaming about them.)
SO ANYWAY as many of you know if you’ve been following me for longer than about a month, I have known about The Gathering and what happens therein since, like, February (shit, the very first fic I wrote and posted for Gargoyles on AO3 referenced it, before I’d ever seen a lick of the show) so I’ve been waiting very impatiently to get to this point. I am pleased to report that holy shit it was worth the wait.
First of all, THE GATHERING. Everybody coming back to Avalon and lavishing tribute on Oberon---with the exception of two, both of whom have said on-screen that they like it on Earth and they don’t want to go back. The Banshee gets dragged kicking and screaming (pretty literally) and Oberon uhhhh handles that exactly as I thought he would.
However, there’s one more Child left: Puck.
And Oberon’s going after Puck himself.
Me: *commences screaming internally*
Second of all, we’re back!! In Manhattan! Where all my favorite characters are! Fox and Xanatos are becoming parents and all the grandparents are gathered in the Eyrie Building to await news. We also finally see Preston Vogel and Owen in the same room and, unsurprisingly, it’s Xanatos’s dad who makes note of how similar they look.
Vogel’s prissy response and Owen’s smirk, I’m never gonna be over it.
Also hey I’m pretty sure Owen was the first person non-biological-parent person to meet the new baby, and woo boy do I have feelings about that, too.
Anastasia: “I remarried my first husband.” Owen: *visibly has a heart attack on screen* “I’m sorry I just remembered I have to be somewhere. That is else. Now.”
Also can we just appreciate how Owen says “Don’t leave your wife or son alone with Anastasia” with absolutely no other explanation or additional context and Xanatos just. Does it. Yanks his kid straight out of Grandma’s arms because Owen said so.
I really, really think as soon as Xanatos heard Oberon call Anastasia “Titania” he clocked to what was going on; Fox is still visibly confused but you can see Xanatos has already put the pieces together because he’s had a Child in human form working for him for five years.
XANATOS JUST FUCKING DECKS A GARGOYLE DOG AND KNOCKS IT OFF HIM?? Like holy shit dude that’s impressive.
G O D the scene where Xanatos goes to Owen and demands to know if he knew about Titania and her plans. It’s the first time we ever seen him actually angry with Owen, because he trusts him and they tell each other everything, and this is a big thing for Owen not to tell him. And then the moment he finds out Owen’s been planning for this for nine months, it’s like all is forgiven. Because he knew he could count on Owen.
Which is immediately followed by “Wait, where are you going?” as Owen leaves him and I am just gonna sit here and clutch my pillow to my chest. I’m never gonna be over that, just like I’m never gonna be over Owen doing literally everything in his power (short of actually breaking his contract) to make sure that Xanatos and his family are as protected as they can be.
And in the next scene, Xanatos is still hung up on the fact that Owen left. “How could he desert me now?” Like. Owen has literally been there for him through everything for five years but now, when Xanatos most needs him, he’s gone.
I’m gonna do a Petros Xanatos appreciation post at some point, because this dude is like. A fisherman from Maine. And now he’s got a skyscraper-sized fairy king trying to kidnap his grandson while his son is having an emotional breakdown over his assistant leaving and Petros just rolls with it. And later harpoons said fairy king in the chest.
Me: HOLY SHIT YOU JUST HARPOONED OBERON IN THE CHEST. Petros’s face: HOLY SHIT I JUST HARPOONED OBERON IN THE CHEST.
Also man, I’m iffy on Renard and I don’t like Vogel, but it was very gratifying to see them show up in Fortress 2 and help fight. Renard might not like Xanatos very much but he does still love his daughter and he’s absolutely never going to let anything happen to his grandson as long as he’s alive.
I am not surprised that Oberon essentially rescinded his promise to Goliath at the end of episode 42 but oh man I was still pissed about it.
So much of Oberon’s time on screen is spent with him being a hypocritical bastard. He makes the rules, but he doesn’t have to follow them. He banished everyone for a thousand years to teach them humility, but never learned it himself. He forbids intervening in human affairs, but tries to take Alex from his parents, which is the very definition of intervening, as Xanatos points out. He promises Goliath and his clan immunity from his magic and three episodes later is all “I decide what that means.” I want him to get punched so much.
“I’m afraid, my lord, there’s one. Nuisance. Left.” Y’all I screamed. BEST SCENE.
“Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere’s PUCK!”
I knew this scene was coming; I knew it, and that reveal was still better than I could’ve hoped.
And Oberon had no idea who he really was! He really believed Owen was just another mortal, even though he knew Titania as soon as he saw her. Like bitch the only reason you were here in this city in the first place is because you were looking!! For him!!
I’m gonna end up watching Puck’s explanation scene like 20 times, I swear. It’s so good. The visual aids, the way he uses his statues to attack Oberon as he’s talking, his puns and quips...it’s SO much fun and I love every second of it.
And he loves!! Being!! Owen!! He loves working with Xanatos! He doesn’t want to go back to Avalon yet! I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS!
And he only asks for more time. He asks Oberon to leave Alex alone and put off the Gathering for another few centuries. That’s it! Centuries which are nothing for the fae, but will give Puck more time with Xanatos (and maybe time enough to wiggle out of the Gathering entirely). Oberon’s perfectly capable of rewriting the rules at his choosing.
But Oberon’s pissed as hell that one of his servants is siding with a mortal over him. That the loyalty he is owed is going to a human, and he cannot stand it.
Gosh I love that Fox is the last line of defense. She’s been with her baby this whole time, and she’s changed into real clothes and gotten a fuckoff big gun. And I think that’s really indicative of her relationship with Xanatos: they don’t necessarily work together the way he and Owen do; they each do their own thing and it usually complements what the other is doing.
Fox fucking knocks Oberon through a wall. That was so gratifying.
I know I’m talking a lot about Xanatos and Owen, and that’s for obvious reasons, but these episodes have a lot of wonderful moments between Xanatos and Fox as well. For a man whose marriage proposal started with “we’re genetically compatible,” it’s abundantly clear that he really loves her and she loves him. While Goliath goes to Oberon to plead for a peaceful solution, Xanatos goes immediately to Fox to hold her.
I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS LITTLE FAMILY.
A LOT OF FEELINGS, BECAUSE GODDAMN YOU BETTER BELIEVE PUCK IS PART OF THE FAMILY TOO.
I actually paused before the next scene and couldn’t bring myself to watch for several minutes because I knew what was going to happen and no.
NO.
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
NOOOOOOOO PUCK NOOOOOO
BRB sobbing forever
If I hadn’t already hated Oberon with every fiber of my being this scene would’ve done it.
He begs Oberon to reconsider but of frigging course Oberon won’t. The only way he’ll reconsider---MAYBE---is if Puck changes his mind and comes back to Avalon, along with Alex. And I think Puck knows that.
And thus
This was the very first gif I ever made for the show, before I’d seen any of it, and now I have all the feelings. Because it’s in this moment that Puck accepts his punishment, gives up his home and his magic, in order to stay with Xanatos and keep Alex with his parents. My heart.
Oberon is such a fucking dick.
Also holy shit let’s just take a moment to talk about Fox? She’s not close to her dad at all, but she’s obviously been very close with her mother, and now in the span of a single night she’s given birth, found out that her mother is really Titania, found out she’s part-fae, and had her mother and her mother’s husband try to take her child. Like oh my God, her entire world has been upended on what’s supposed to be one of the happiest days of her life. And now she’s got to deal with all that knowledge on top of being mom to a newborn. Like. Someone give her a hug and some therapy, holy fuck.
“Didn’t things work out to your satisfaction?” “Well you tried to steal my kid and I literally just watched your husband banish and torture my husband’s boyfriend closest friend for trying to help us so uh. Maybe get the hell out of my house.”
And then Xanatos goes to Goliath to thank him for his help and Goliath rejects it come the fuck on dude.
He does come around like 20 seconds later but still.
This is a man who’s had a very bad night with very awful things happening to all the people he cares about.
Also LORD to be a fly on the wall when Goliath has to tell Elisa and the rest of the clan what all happened the following night.
Elisa: *spits coffee halfway across the clock tower* “Wait what the fuck do you mean Owen Burnett is Puck?!”
Hudson: “...aye, I can see that.”
I’d say I’m not gonna write that fic but at this point *flings hands up* WHO KNOWS
ANYWAY. I loved these episodes, I love this show, this was everything I’d hoped, my feelings are LEGION, and I’m going to write Oberon getting punched in the face a billion times. It’s what he deserves.
