THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS [x]
This is a film directed by Wes Anderson in 2001. The story follows a dysfunctional family and their struggles. In this photoset I have also included stills from my project piece Awake. The production designer for The Royal Tenenbaums was David Wasco. Each of the characters in TRT has a bedroom that reflects their own personality, the production designer created the look of these rooms to match each character, even their outfits match, and almost blend in, with their surroundings. In my film I tried to make the surroundings of the character believable to her personality; I focused the props around the desk as that is one of the main points of filming in the piece. I added several pink and ‘girly’ props to the desk including a fluffy pen, a make-up bag, and pink bunting around the desk. The mirror on the desk is white which adds to the light, girly feel. I focused the props around this ‘girly’ character type because it is a female stereotype and recognisable.
In my sketchbook I looked at the meanings behind colours and by including pink and white a lot on the desk, it reflects naivety, femininity, and youth. These representations reflect the character because she is a young adult (youth), she is traditionally feminine in the way that she wears makeup (eg, the makeup bag)and she has shoulder length hair (which is traditionally female to have longer hair). The naivety is reflected in how she is young, and when the webcam begins to play up, she dismisses it as her own mistake for not closing it as well as how she takes a while to realise that the webcam and laptop are ‘indestructible’ and she simply throws the webcam off and goes to bed. The fact that she goes to bed before she takes more extreme action against the electrical equipment reflects her character and the naive idea that she could simply wake up and everything be back to normal as if it was a dream. The story progresses to challenge her idea of that.
In Wes Anderson’s films, all of his sets a richly decorated with many layers of props and such to create deep characters and gives the audience a lot to look at. If I had been able to have access to more decorations and more time, I would have added a lot more elements to the surroundings rather than simply just a few items.
Why do we tell stories?
‘Anthropologists tell us that storytelling is central to human existence. That it’s common to every known culture. That it involves a symbiotic exchange between teller and listener — an exchange we learn to negotiate in infancy.‘
The definition of a story is ‘ a narrative, either true or fictitious, in prose or verse, designed to interest, amuse, or instruct the hearer or reader; tale.’ It’s purpose is to entertain and to engage the audience. In film, we start with a story, the purpose of a film is to tell a story in an interesting way by using cinematography, sound, etc. to tell the story as effectively as possible
What is drama?
Drama is defined as ‘ an exciting, emotional, or unexpected event or circumstance.’ and is a key element that keeps an audience engaged and interested in a piece of work. Viewer’s care about the drama on screen when they are emotionally invested in the characters and their lives within the film. An example of drama would be a TV soap opera; every episode, something new happens that changes the storyline to keep the audience interested. The way the piece is edited and set up can create tension, suspense, and surprise that adds to the drama to make in more intriguing.
What is narrative?
I read this post [x] about the difference between a story and a narrative. The narrative refers to the order in which the events of a story play out on screen; some films can mess around with the structure of timings and show the ending of a film at the beginning etc. Some example of films that use this narrative structure include Pulp Fiction, Pans Labyrinth, and Quadrophenia. The effect of this means that the audience knows the ending of the story but they are interested to discover how the character(s) ended up there.
Second Session! (Part 1)
When we last checked in, we were all ready to hit the town. Except for not the whole party was there…so I did the only thing that made sense.
I sent them through a filler encounter!
It starts out, they’ve been ambushed, and 6 hand crossbow bolts come out of the forest at them.
Roll to Dodge!
Wizard: “15” Warlord: “17” Rouge: “16” Cleric: “Natural 20!”
"You catch a bolt with your staff, successfully sending it back at it’s origin. You hear a voice cry out, and the slap of it hitting home."
Five humanoids emerge from the surrounding treelike, and as they do, you can see the features on their faces shifting, forming, and then shifting again. When you see the traits of your own faces is when you begin your attack.
The battle goes on, and the Warlord had rolled a 1 for initiative, so he obviously went last. Wanting to make up for his failed roll, and perhaps God himself was smiling on the dice, he rolls a Nat.20 on his attack, and does more than enough damage to OHKO one of the 5 remaining doppelgängers.
More and more out party does damage, and the doppelgängers fall one by one.
Until they get to the last one. She sheathes her short sword, puts away her hand crossbow, and holds up her hands.
"I yield, spare my life and I will in turn, serve you."
The Warlord spoke up. “What would you be able to do?”
Before I joined with this rabble, I was in the intelligence services of a nobleman. During the first wars, I was to gather information about the forces he was to do battle with.
When he died, I was released from service honorably, but I couldn’t find it within my self to accept the severance.
I’m Sarai, by the way.
The Warlord, with kindness spared the doppelgängers life, found himself with a willing new compatriot.
Studio II: Completion (Project one)
As the first project of the semester comes to a close, I look back and reminisce at what I have learnt and accomplished. Abstract art is definitely not my best field, but after doing this project and the paper collage tutorials G did with us, I think I can say that it was a fun learning experience that helped me to understand how abstract art is made and considered. It makes me feel like I have slightly improved myself and my artistic knowledge because I didn't know a large amount on abstract art and it's design process and now I believe I can create it for myself in my own time. The three collages I finished make me think back to the times when I used to make collages at high school and below having people try to teach me how to be creative and have fun doing it. Although now it is on a much more serious level but with the same fundamental concept of being abstract.
Studio II: Abstract art (Project one)
Working on such a creative project like this is hard for me contemplate because my thought process is very 1,2,3 and I don't think i've ever tried to work so far out of the box as I have with this project. I think that this project though not the hardest in workload was the most challenging for me because I had to think in an extremely creative way which made it very difficult at times to come up with ideas. I tried to make the collages I created have less and less serious thoughts behind them so I could create an abstract collage instead of a concrete collage which is what I would be used to doing.
Reflecting back on my collages, I think I made the right decision to use mistakes to my advantage and build around them because it didn't just help me create the collages, it also helped me to realize how I can use mistakes to gain more favorable ideas which sounds obvious but anytime that I made a mistake I would try to remove it if possible if not start from scratch.
Studio II: Time-Based Collage "Humility is bliss" (Project one)
I made this video collage with the intention to show how today's society acts towards humility and failure and how people don't think about how they will do something they just move forward. To create this video collage I went through some of Failarmy's videos that I think showed the best humility and doing something without thinking it through. I also looked through videos of Britain's got talent, X factor and american idol to find people who get told that they are terrible at singing and how they react.
Studio II: Conceptual statement (Project one)
I created the three collages for this project sticking to the core concepts through thought but developing the original look of the collages by adding an abstract touch after the base had been created. An example of this would be my digital collage using advice I tried to add textures into the collage to make it even more abstract getting a random image of the internet and then using photoshop's editing power to change them into something that looked like a texture on top of the base image.
The main purpose of my work was to convey how today's society acts within my chosen core concepts being want, role models and humility. If a mistake was made in a particular collage like gluing a part of the paper collage in the wrong place, instead of deleting it and trying to stick closely to my earlier vision I used the mistake as a stepping stone into the collages finish and developed the idea and concept further and into more detail.
When I first started this project I thought that I would find as much images as I could then find the best images to put in each place. As I developed my ideas further I found that choosing a random image then looking at where I had placed it how I can shape the next image around it.
In the end I stuck to the core concepts of each collage by developing the idea behind them as much as I could to give it a random yet organized look. The paper collage used paper material that suited the idea on the first layer I then chose to chose random images for the second layer and seeing what image I could use next to develop further. The digital consisted of making a creepy image of role models in today's society, I then added images on top of this image and used photoshop's editing ability to try to make the location I had added the image to make it look synchronized. Finally, the video collage used videos of failure and how people react to it. I developed this from the original idea by finding many fail videos mashing them together to give it an abstract appearance and then moving key video clips to show a story.
