There are plenty of answers he could give him to hurt him, oh he can make this very cruel. He can laugh at his face, he can pretend he doesn’t care. Only when it actually comes to reacting, to responding, he only feels a wave of sadness washing over him. In Edward’s mind they were just friends. Because he didn’t want to admit that he had felt anything more for Oswald...and because it had never occurred to him that Oswald could just see him as anything more than a friend. They were certainly important to one another, they were the only one for each other (or at least that’s what Ed thought once).

The problem was that...it just didn’t matter now. Wasn’t that worse? That what they had and what they could have had all gone in a moment of selfishness. Even if any part of Oswald had actually loved him, the broken trust between could never be repaired. Only Oswald could make words such as ‘I love you’ mean both so little and hurt him so much.

So Ed can’t laugh, he can’t smirk, he can’t find something clever or cruel to say. Instead he gives the other a small sad smile (had he ever smiled at Oswald like that before? Had he ever sounded like he was hurt and not angry? anger had been so much easier). ❝Ican hide in the shadows or in plain sight. I will never come from your enemies,I will never kill you but I can damage you worse than death. What am I?❞

What would he do if he didn’t have Oswald? As much as the other didn’t seem to like Isabella much or understand that Ed had truly been in love with her…he had been supportive, in the way Oswald knew how to be supportive. Oswald had told him that he’d be lost without Ed, but so would Edward.

He gave him a soft, genuine smile. When was the last time he had smiled? It felt like ages ago, and he knew for sure that if it wasn’t for Oswald, he wouldn’t be smiling at all. Without thinking about it too much, he wrapped his arms around the other — both to thank him and to comfort himself— and he pulled away ❝Thank you, Oswald. I don’t know what I would do without you.❞

Shaking his head as if he can’t believe it, he grins. How did he get so lucky? Isabella is the most wonderful woman he has ever met. Not only she is beautiful but she is clever, kind and…she actually seems to like him, she understood him and accepted him even though she knew what he has done. If there was ever any doubt that Edward is in love with her, he is certain now.
