THE MEME LIVED!!
(Obs: check the original pilot or/and how Ray Mona found it.)
Regarding Saban Moon - apart from the actual found footage itself - there’s one thing I still can’t get over:
Frank Ward, producer and copyright holder of Saban Moon, was contacted by this amazing lost media investigator lady who he didn’t even know and she was like “Hello, Mr. Ward! The Library of Congress has Saban Moon, but they need written permission from the copyright holder to give the copy to me so I can share it with the internet. Would you sign this paper?”, and he signed it, and it’s now on the internet. Name an other producer and copyright holder who would do the same with any other piece of media.

@smvillainsweek Sailor Moon Villains Week 2024 Day 7: Free
This is it. My top secret and now very late Sailor Moon Villains Week project. Remember back in 2022 when the lost pilot for “Saban Moon,” the proposed She-Ra-style American adaptation of Sailor Moon before they decided to just dub the anime, was unearthed? Did you wonder what the Shitennou would be like if it was an actual series and they would be included? No? Well, I did, and I know there is a certain cohort out there that wondered. Here’s Saban Shitennou, or Negacommanders as they mostly likely would have been called, like the DiC dub.
The goal was not to create a version of the Shitennou that is objectively good or I (or anyone) personally likes, it was to imagine what the 90s Western animation team that brought Sailor Moon sky flyers and live action musical sequences would have done. So more diversity, less androgyny. More haircuts you can set your watch to. Zoisite gets gender swapped like in the DiC dub for the sake of diversity, but 90s Western animation only liked a very specific level of diversity, so no LGBTQ+ characters or romance, no interracial romance, no villain romance at all. More generic fantasy outfits (mostly stolen from She-Ra and He-Man), none of that 90s padded jacket thing that increases androgyny.
Thanks to the KunZoi Discord server for helping decide what their names should be—the DiC dub names, but even wonkier. At the very least, Kunzite needed a name change because 90s Western animation would not name a male character after a pink rock. (Very specific level of diversity only.)
After almost 30 years, the lost pilot of the fabled ill-fated Toon Makers American Sailor Moon cartoon has actually been found! And to commemorate the occasion, I had to draw this version. Cheers to “Saban Moon” and rediscovering lost media!
