Gran is the name given to an elderly woman who carried Nezumi to safety while their people were being murdered. She raised him and was killed by No.6, and Nezumi was then taken into custody. She basically manipulated and planted the idea of revenge into Nezumi’s mind from a pretty young age, telling him never to trust or love or be open with anyone. She basically made him believe everything and everyone was out to get him, so it’s no wonder he acts the way he does. It talks of her more in the novel, not so much in the manga or anime.
