I made a speedpaint for this, which explains a bit of what happened near the beginning of the video, but I’ll still go into detail about what happened this week bellow the cut:

WARNING: I’m going to talk about a major injury in-depth, to portray exactly what happened to her. As I said, there’s a lighter version of what happened in the video if you don’t feel comfortable knowing all of the details, but I do feel it’s important to note what all was going on.

Sweetie was the first dog I met when I started working at the animal clinic, and it made me so happy to be with her. She would go outside and get so excited, sprinting in circles and making sharp turns to run ahead of me.

I should mention before I go on that the greyhound breed as a whole is extremely prone to developing bone cancer due to poor breeding. They’re amazing dogs, but their genes are terrible due to them initially being bred for one thing: racing. I’m unsure about other breeds, but I do know that when greyhounds get bone cancer, the prognosis is usually very short. I’ll let this article explain, but basically the most humane option in a lot of cases is euthanasia.

About 2 weeks ago, Sweetie started limping on her right back leg. It wasn't anything too serious at the time; it was hardly noticeable at all and the only time i noticed it is when she wanted to make a sharp turn to run but couldn’t, and would just start limping more. Because this went on for more than a couple days, I put it on our main board so one of the vet techs could examine her leg. Event the other kennel techs were saying nothing was wrong with her when they were walking her.

A few days passed and nothing was being done, so I had a vet tech who was walking by the yard the same time I was walking Sweetie take a look at it. She couldn’t find anything wrong with the leg, but found an irritated area on the back of her paw pad. She added this detail to the board so Sweetie could get a simple medication, or another tech’s opinion, but still.....nothing done.

Cut to Monday, during Hurricane Irma. I had to go in to work while the hurricane was passing through, though by this time it was close to ending and a lot of us were in the aftermath. I got to the clinic and the power was out, the air was hot and muggy, every room stunk, there was very little lighting, and the only other person there was the head doctor himself. The first thing that happens when I arrive is the doctor coming up to me and asking for help with picking up Sweetie because she was in the yard and couldn’t move

Her leg was swollen like a balloon, to the point that very few joints could actually be seen, and she couldn’t even let it touch the ground.

We helped her back in and kept her comfortable for the next few days until the Doctor came back. I felt guilty that I didn’t make any of the other techs take a look at her before this happened or they could've caught that something more was wrong with her leg. But I know no one believed me because “She limps on and off all the time,” “Just give it a few days, she’ll get better.”

I spent an extra amount of my free time sitting with her and petting her, and she would smile whenever I would go in to greet her. Along with the swollen leg, the swollen paw pad had gotten much worse and was starting to bleed and leak fluid (I was told because of the effect on her lymph nodes from everything else going on in her body).

Yesterday, she finally got X-rays taken, and cancer was found in her joint, along with a splintered bone, so the decision was made by all of us to euthanize her. I was beside her, petting and talking to her the whole time. I ended up crying on a coworker’s shoulder when it was done. I’ve never cried over the death of an animal before, much less a family pet. With Sweetie, I was heartbroken. I wasn't expecting to react that way when the time came.

I talked to the doctor and asked if I could have the ashes after she gets cremated, that way I can spread her ashes in a big open field, that way she can be doing what she loved and run around forever.

It's a hard and lugubrious day for the Filipinos. I can't find myself to judge nor to blame. I just rest with the fact that God has a reason for this to happen. We may not get the answers now, but in praying we can somehow attain peace. Pray for our 3 executed kababayans, pray for their families, pray for the others remaining in jail. It is powerful, it is meaningful.
