Here are some of my conceptual sketches for a colouring book related to Vancouver Island. For 2 of my concepts I used the idea of family because most of my family lives on the island.
In my first concept, a bunch of sad trees line a logging road and watch as their family is trucked off as lumber. I wanted to do something about logging because it is a large industry on Vancouver Island.
For my second concept I decided I wanted something a little more comical and light-hearted, so I came up with the idea of a bear who has eaten way too many salmon and needs to stop and relax before he explodes. I used to go to Goldstream park when I was younger and see the salmon spawning, so the salmon are definitely an iconic thing for me when I think about the island.
My third concept revisits the idea of family that I often think about when thinking of Vancouver Island. Having spent time living on the island, as well as in Alberta and Saskatchewan, one of the first things that always comes to mind about the island is all the beaches and open ocean. I wanted to do something with crabs because I think they’re pretty weird looking, so I decided to have a royal family of crab knights who live in a sand castle, and one of them is being taken by a seagull. I figured a seagull is basically like a dragon to these little crab knights, so they live in constant fear of the gulls.
a boring day is not a sad day... or not.
