‘just twenty more minutes!’

“You said that ten minutes ago and the answer is still no.”
Ja’far’s an early riser, one of the few among the generals. It helps that he doesn’t actually sleep or rarely goes to bed in first place but no matter what he’s always up well before the sun. He likes the quiet of the early morning, the time to see to it that everything is ready for the day before the bustle of palace life begins.
And while ‘official waker of the king’ is not in his official job description, he finds himself adding Sinbad to his list of morning chores.
He comes in for the second time that morning to find the king still tangled in his bed sheets, buried in the half dozen pillows as if he might hide there from his adviser. Ja’far hates the game they play.
Tell Sinbad to get up. Sinbad doesn’t get up. Tell him again. Sinbad tries to bargain for more time. Ja’far refuses. Sinbad makes excuses. Ja’far threatens violence.
Ja’far walks to the windows and throws open the blinds, lets in the warm morning sun and goes about loudly setting out Sinbad’s things; the basin of water, his clothes for the day, his myriad of jewelry. He callously pulls the sheets off of Sinbad, ignores his usual state of undress and goes to see if the breakfast tray has arrived.
“If you’re not up by the time I’m back with your breakfast, the next I come in this room it’ll be with a bucket of ice water.”
