The one thing that I deeply admire about Fruits Basket is that, on the outside, you’d think that Yuki and Kyo would form this love triangle with Tohru, but that’s not what strikes the tension between the two of them at all. They aren’t competing for her romantic interesting. Instead, they want what the other doesn’t, and what they lack is due to their trauma. 

Their rivalry delves deeper than just the shallow “I can treat her better than him” trope. This isn’t an anime about love rivalry. It’s about their trauma and character growth. It’s about how Yuki and Kyo overcome their own internal struggle and pain in order to let go of their deep-rooted contempt for one another.
