🪧 ✊ ♻️  A mining project in the Dominican Republic has been halted after thousands protested!

The country’s president ordered the suspension of Canadian company GoldQuest’s proposed gold, copper, and silver mining project planned to be located in Cordillera Central, nearby San Juan province which relies heavily on agriculture. From teachers to engineers, taxi drivers to doctors, the demonstrators all expressed environmental concerns about the project’s potential impact on the local water supply and farmland — the variety of walks of life have proven impactful in the project’s suspension!

UNICEF, in a partnership with the Government of Japan and the UNDP, is constructing 165 schools for over 33,000 children, half of them girls, across Afghanistan! The schools are complete with adequate and indoor classroom space, safe and hygienic water access, and solar power for light. The inclusion of boundary walls provides a safe haven for education, an especially important factor for girls' attendance in particular.
