There’s no spitting in baseball ...?
The question on everybody’s mind as we get ready for baseball is not which Miggy will show up, or whether the Tigers can compete.
The big question: Is baseball even possible without spitting?
“Spring” training, in these times of coronavirus, will start July 1. For the Tigers, it won’t happen in Lakeland, Fla., as it normally would; the team will work out at Comerica Park, in Detroit.
The actual season - an abbreviated schedule of 60 games, as opposed to the normal 162-game season - will begin July 23 or 24.
New rules will apply, including various safety protocols. For example, players won’t be showering in the clubhouse and pitchers will be forbidden from licking their fingers (they do this to get a better grip on the ball).
Also, there will be no fans in the seats and no spitting by the players. In other words, no spectating and no expectorating.
