Mum? Dad? I’m-
[ this post may contain sensitive media ]
these are just two of our posts which have been marked sensitive by the new “safety mode” feature implemented by tumblr. there is no explicit content in these posts. I do not even know why I am able to see them, as I am under 18 and tumblr had been treating me as such. there are numerous other of our posts which have also been flagged, but I am unable to see them and thus unable to report what I know to be clean content. I have reported these as falsely tagged nsfw, and was notified that I would receive an email after they have been reviewed. I will follow up if the email is of any substance and assuming I receive it.
I feel helpless to do anything about this. surely staff have heard the protests, but I don’t believe they have issued a response. a petition seems powerless, as it only reinforces our unrest, which I’m sure tumblr staff is already aware of. regardless, I have already signed one which you can find here. there is simply no indication that it will make a difference. I just feel hopeless.
objectively, this is not a big deal. I believe tumblr’s intentions were good. however, the message sent by this failed attempt to give people more control over the content they see sends a deeply disheartening symbolic message. this message is only amplified by their subsequent ignorance of the issue.
sapphic blogs are a safe space. they are one of the few places where we can be authentic wlw. I value the culture around these blogs immensely. these blogs are no longer safe spaces when they become riddled with false claims of “sensitive content.” this is in that every time I see a post labeled in this way on a sapphic blog, I am reminded that my very existence appears to be considered sensitive content. @staff, fix this. and either apologize or take the damn rainbow out of your profile picture. your actions do not match your words.
@staff fuck you this is worse than the public school dress code
Alright I need to make a post here. I know there are hundreds of other posts ranting about the new “safety mode” but i seriously feel the need to make my own. This blog is 3 days old, I have started making moodboards because I like how they look and they are calming to make, letting the anxiety about literally everything go. One thing that I get the most requests about is to make boards for the lgbtq+ community, as a member myself these are some of my favourites to make. Within literally 20 seconds of posting a new pride edit, they are marked as explicit content. Now, I am under 18 and can’t turn off this safety mode, half of this blog has been marked as sensory content and I can’t even see my own stuff. I like reading through the tags that people put on my stuff and I can’t see that because Tumblr thinks that I am not mature enough to see a post of my own edit because it has different coloured photos arranged to make a pride flag.
However, my posts aren't the only ones being flagged, every other post on my dash is flagged too. Now I cant see photos on my dash of:
cute dogs
a harry potter edit
a photo of Bill Potts from Doctor Who
a gif from a dan and Phil video
and countless others
What Really bugs me though is was doesn’t get flagged though. I follow a couple tags, this morning a post came through the painting tag which was clearly nsfw, even had it tagged on the original post, but was this flagged? No. Were those p/bots that try to follow any and every account blocked? No.
Tumblr I try to keep my dash as clean as possible but are things going to slip in? Yes of course, but that is going to be on every website you go to. Today you can’t even go onto an informational website without getting clickbait ads. You aren’t my mother who has the right to tell me that I can’t follow what I want to follow and to make sure I don’t have lgbt content on my dash. I already deal with one homophobic mother, tumblr please don’t be a second one because this website is my refuge per say. Its the only place I can be open about who I am and you are taking that away from me.
Please Please Please take this new update away and focus on other things that are going to make tumblr a better place. Get rid of bots, add a blacklisting feature for mobile, there are other ways to go about this. Honestly you could keep the update but allow anyone to turn it off at a given time. You are hurting yourself be keeping this update. @staff fix this now
You know the safety mode is trash right? And that it blocks LGBT+ posts, even though it doesn't block pron blogs? Now I can't even see The Avatar and Disney related stuff
My tumblr dash but every time I see the safety mode blocked content I look into the camera like I am on The Office
Um, one of your newest posts have been blocked by safe mode? I think it was a mistake, um, I'm not actually sure.
Thanks for letting me know! : O
One of my other posts got marked as well, though I’m not sure which one. This one was just a daily star, though, so I have no idea why it was marked >_>
Keep on shining!♥ Courtney
