How to be an ally that doesn't include a saftey pin:
1. Fund raise for non-profit organizations and local groups
1.1. Do research on the non-profit organization and local group first. Make sure that donations are actually going to making a difference and not into the CEOs pocket
2. Volunteer with non-profit organizations and local groups
3. Call/email/write to your local politicians
4. Participate in civil disobedience and direct actions that have a clear goal.
4.1. Anti-Trump protests are cathartic but as of right now the only goal is to tell the government that they don’t want Trump or what Trump represents, that’s awesome. But prehaps if the goal of the protests was to dismantle the electoral college or was anti-voter suppresssion or was anti-election fraud then there might be results that come out of the protests. But 60 million about 48% of the voters voted for Trump, our current system says he won, you can’t be upset and him or his voters but you can be upset at the system that allowed him to get elected.
5. Participate in the political process at all and any level (volunteer, register voters, run for office…)
6. Educate yourself on the history and culture of the oppressed group(s)
7. If you see something, say something. If you someone being harrassed, stand up and tell the harrasser that their intolerance is not acceptable.
7.1 if you don’t feel safe getting involved in a confrontation, get a group of people to help. You can also reach out to community leaders or security depending on where the harrassing is going on. The last resort is talk to the police. I have learned this the hard way, but the police are unreliable, and we don’t know which side they’ll take.
8. Don’t accept donations or give your hard earned money to corporations that participate in oppressing others. Research before you buy, sell, or accept donations. [insert link(s) to list(s) of corporations that support hate]
