i think i figured out why JT tangles herself in wires???

she likes to tangle herself in the wires for the thermometer/hygrometer/thermostat sensors, which freaked me (and my dad) out the first like 7 times i saw her do it. i eventually figured she's fine and can get out at any time, but the question remained: why she do that??

but then a couple nights ago i saw her tangled while pushing up against the lid of her enclosure in a (fortunately no longer viable) attempt to bust through (because i put a rock there)

and i realized: i think she was tangling herself in the wires to push against them for extra leverage!

guys, i think my wobbler ball python might be... smart??? 😰

happy international snake day from JT!

she's shedding today so this is a picture from yesterday, when i rudely interrupted her pre-shed sulk to take her to the vet to examine a (fortunately very mild!) upper respiratory infection.

this picture was taken directly after she got probed to double check her sex given her unusually large cloacal spurs (congrats! it's a girl!), at which point she clung much tighter than usual. it was a revelatory moment for me, because i knew she was pretty comfortable getting slung around my neck by now and she doesnt wobble when handled (indeed, it often STOPS the wobble). having her apparently specifically seek security in it was another thing entirely, though. i'm so happy i'm a safe place for her now 🥹

so the other day jamelia T the ball python refused to eat even though she had just shed and ought to have been hungry. she was still VERY active, so we figured between the high activity level without the hunger to match and the time of year being right, she had entered horny season.

that same night i slept a little bit on the couch, where i tend to spend the first half of the night bc of my shitty old man spine, and came up to my room around 1am to--wait what is baby luigi doing there

oh for fuck's sake

video of my snake being overjoyed to have new furniture installed! her previous owner didnt put any furniture in her enclosure except the water dish and one hide that was way too big, so it's been really rewarding to see her flourish given some cover and things to interact with!

it's humbling to think that even with some not-particularly-advanced measures, i've provided a level of care JT never even knew was possible. in a world where it's easy to feel powerless, it's huge to change one individual's entire world for the better, even if they're a snake.

i genuinely got teary about how excited she was about the hammocks. it was the first time she'd been out since her last meal--and it may have been a special appearance just for the purpose, she's gone back to bed since lol--and i'm not great at interpreting snake body language yet but there was no doubt in my mind that she was utterly delighted.

i spent that day using hot glue and taking measurements for the table saw and sanding corners, and i never dreamed i would feel as fulfilled as i did watching jamelia tinseltoes get so excited about it that she lost control or her body a little bit. what could be more rewarding than that?
