Moustached Tamarin Saguinus mystax
A monkey found in tropical rainforests of Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. About 60% of the female tamarin population have trichromatic vision, allowing them to see a broader range of color, while the remaining moustached tamarin population have dichromatic vision. This is an evolutionary adaptation that enables females to more easily find and identify fruit.

This little tamarin monkey is adorable, I know. He’s like a little Dr. Seuss character. - So cute, in fact, that it was stolen from the jungle for the pet trade. - Usually the mother is shot so that the baby can be retrieved. Often, the baby can’t survive without the mother or simply dies from the fall. Therefore, another mother is shot at a chance to obtain another baby. - This tiny primate was in a “wildlife sanctuary” in Ecuador. However, it was easy to see that the owner of this establishment was simply exploiting the animals - charging a high rate for visitors to view the animals, yet keeping the animals in very poor conditions. - He was making money off of visitors, at the animals’ expense. - Saddest was an ocelot, in a very small cage - a metal box with a cement floor, out in the sun. - When traveling, please keep your eyes out for situations like these. - Don’t fund these types of operations. Don’t pay to have your photo taken with an animal; don’t pay for anything that involves an animal who should be in the wild. - Many rescued animals cannot be returned to the wild, sadly, due to imprinting, but it is usually clear based on how the center is run whether or not these animals are being unfairly exploited. - Ask questions. Where did this animal come from? Why is it in such a small cage? Doesn’t this creature deserve better? - #saguinusnigricollis #tamarin #saguinus #ecuador #protect #respect #wearealltrulywild https://www.instagram.com/p/BrSvnM-A3Ds/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=yyilk5fgpgb6
